Weekend Assignment Editor - Newsy at The E.W. Scripps Company in Washington, Washington DC

Job Description:

Newsy's innovative cross-platform newsroom is looking for pro-active, self-starter to lead our weekend coverage. The weekend assignment editor should have the ability to skillfully plan editorial needs and help guide the network’s weekend news coverage. The successful candidate will be able to simultaneously handle a variety of stories -- including managing reporter/crew schedules to coordinating breaking news coverage. Newsy provides independent and solutions-focused journalism. You're a fit if you have a commitment to accuracy, objectivity and the fast-paced nature of a newsroom.

You'll often work independently, handing out assignments to reporters and other weekend staff. Ability to write scripts, edit video, and understand web management platforms is a must.

Key Activities:


  • Weekend coverage editor is responsible for assignments, planning and packaging news


  • Works to adjusting coverage as news breaks


  • Monitors wires, social media and other broadcast networks for news developments


  • Distributes information to network as needed


  • Monitor upcoming news stories and develop coverage plans


  • Write scripts and produce packages as needed


  • Perform other duties as needed and directed


  • Weekend, holiday and overtime as the news cycle demands


Skills and Abilities:


  • Independently performs tasks with limited instruction


  • Work well within a team


  • Understanding of how to gather news for live and packaged production


  • Video editing required


  • Knowledge of AP Style


  • Familiarity with iNews


  • Past experience building content in a CMS


  • Ability to meet strict deadlines


  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment


  • Set an example for staff in professional and strict adherence to the journalistic standards of Scripps and Newsy.


Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field required


  • Background in video news required


  • Management experience required


  • Proficiency with computers and related software required


  • At least 3 years experience work on a local or national newsroom assignment desk
