Senior Director - Newsy at The E.W. Scripps Company in Chicago, Illinois

Job Description:

Newsy is actively seeking an experienced live newscast director with a keen eye for details, is eager to lead a team, and is dedicated to enhancing the creative process of newscast production.

The senior director will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of live news program production, as well as live event and special event productions. The senior director will coordinate closely with the engineering and IT departments to enhance day-to-day control room operations and workflows. The senior director will report to the Senior Director of Linear Programming.

What you’ll do:

• Lead a team of live newscast directors, technical directors, audio and studio techs, and production assistants




• Develop and improve live newscast production workflows




• Develop and improve pre-production and post-production workflows




• Coordinate with show leadership to build creative development of shows and live events




• Oversee the improvement of control rooms systems and operations




• Oversee the development and improvement, and use-case of studios in Chicago and Washington, D.C.




• Oversee the implementation of new graphics through control room automation systems




• Coordinate with Scripps Broadcast Hub, Engineering and IT departments for consistent workflow improvements




• Daily coordination with MAM (media asset management) leadership

What you bring:

• Sound control room automation experience




• Strong leadership and team coordination skills




• Strong, clear communicator




• Must be able to multitask, meet deadlines and work under pressure




• Experience working in a dynamic, fast-paced newsroom environment strongly preferred

Education and Experience                      

• BS/BA in journalism, communications, engineering or a related field preferred




• Five-plus years live newscasts directing experience in television/linear production required

Work environment

• A moderate level of mobility is required in expediting work flow processes and procedures




• Must be physically able to sit at a workstation and maintain productivity for upwards of eight (8) hours on occasion and adapt to shift work




• A relatively high degree of mental acuity and social skills are necessary to successfully interact with coworkers, newsroom supervisors, and the general public, often under time-sensitive conditions




• Overnight, weekend, holiday, shift and overtime work may be required




• Travel rarely required
