American Water Military Services Group (MSG) works with the United States Military to treat and supply water and to collect and treat wastewater for military installations all over the country as part of the federal government’s Utility Privatization Program.
Primary Role
This position is responsible for administering and managing the end-to-end environmental compliance processes, with a specific focus on enabling technology systems, in order to achieve consistent compliance with all environmental regulations and requirements across the business unit.
Serves as a subject matter expert, leading and driving the management, implementation, development, and continuous enablement of technology systems related to environment program management and compliance, in order to ensure consistent compliance with all applicable environmental regulatory requirements. Ensures the effective use and deployment of compliance systems to generate analytical data, monthly compliance reports for external regulatory agencies. Serves as the primary corporate resource for ensuring environmental compliance technology systems align with established environmental policies and practices, including sample collection and reporting protocols.
Working with the Operations Leadership team and the Environmental Health and Safety team, contributes to the development of operational strategies as it relates to environmental compliance technologies, processes, and best practices.
Key Accountabilities
Implement the American Water Military Services Group environmental strategy to drive performance and sustain environmental compliance and leadership
Ensure the appropriate set-up and configuration of environmental compliance technology systems at each operating location, including the establishment of sample plans, upper and lower control limits, analytical trending, and chemical dosing tracking
Develop and deliver training to operations personnel on the effective use of environmental compliance technology platforms (such as HACHWIMS / LabCal), and end-to-end environmental compliance business processes
Provide support to field personnel in preparing regulatory and non-regulatory reports
Lead and support continuous improvement in environmental compliance technology, systems, and processes,
Maintain technical competency and remains current in industry technology developments to drive and sustain environmental compliance across water and wastewater systems and identify new technologies
Identify opportunities to leverage technology to further integrate operational data and benchtop analytical equipment with existing environmental management technologies
Ensure environmental database integrity through documented standard operating procedures
Lead efforts and leverage data from Computerized Maintenance Management Systems, SCADA, Business Analytics platforms, and environmental compliance technologies to improve internal and external customer access to system data, water quality and environmental compliance information
Improve the customer experience while interacting with American Water on water quality issues
Coordinate development and distribution of annual water quality reports
Lead by example and foster a culture of demonstrated safety and embeds safety in all aspects of environmental compliance and stewardship
Knowledge/Skills
General knowledge of water/wastewater treatment and operations, water quality monitoring, quality assurance programs, and the water/wastewater industry
Excellent knowledge of water quality and environmental regulations affecting the business
Advanced knowledge of current and emerging environmental issues in the water/wastewater industry
Knowledge of industry trade organizations, and current and emerging technologies within the industry
Proficient in data management and data analytics
Advanced competency in technology system management and administration
Very effective communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to effectively deliver training to non-technical personnel, in both virtual and in-person setting

Experience/Education
Total of 10 – 12 years of related work experience
5 years plus experience in environmental compliance, water and/or wastewater operations, project management, and technology system implementation.is required
5 years plus specific experience and knowledge of environmental compliance program management, ideally in the waste and/or wastewater industry
Demonstrated experience in the implementation and management of environmental compliance technology systems (HachWIMS, LabCal), CMMS systems, and database management
Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or equivalent preferred
May be substituted with other certifications and direct experience in the water/wastewater industry
Certifications in water and/or wastewater operations and/or registration as a Professional Engineer preferred
Certifications in water and/or wastewater operations and/or registration as a Professional Engineer preferred
Travel Requirements
Periodic travel in the US up to 20%
