As a member of the R&D Mechanical Engineering group you will be responsible for product, process, and technology development activities of diabetes related products such as insulin pumps, glucose sensors, and related accessories. The Pr. Mechanical Design Engineer will play a lead role in the design, development, sustaining, Design and Process Characterization and Design Verification activities of diabetes products. The individual will have significant ability to influence on technology and process development as new products are conceptualized.

The person filling this role will become part of a dynamic and fast paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product development. They will have the opportunity to interface with vendors and end customer, as well as various functional groups within the diabetes business unit.

The ideal candidate for this position has had experience in medical device design, development, design verification, and validation. This individual has experience in plastic part design as well as electromechanical assemblies. The ideal candidate has a strong background in process design and qualification including Test Method Validation (TMV). This individual has experience in medical devices and aptitude for taking customer feedback and product requirements translating them into meaningful engineering specifications and designs.
A Day in the Life

  • Lead product and process development activities of diabetes management products.

  • Lead and perform process characterization, design verification, and Test Method Validation (TMV) activities.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff.

  • Develop and implement mechanical concept design, perform tolerance analysis, finite element analysis or other design analysis. Apply methodologies such as Design for Reliability and Manufacturing (DRM), Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturing Assembly (DFMA) and Cell Operating System (COS) during process design and development phase.

  • Works closely with strategic partners and vendors to support current products and initiate new production projects and assists in developing processes/techniques to meet contract objectives.

  • Travel to vendor locations and manufacturing sites as needed to help ensure programs meeting deadlines and troubleshoot issues.

  • Drive corrective and preventive actions with appropriate and detailed follow up.

  • Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to product development of diabetes devices and accessories.

  • Design components to be manufactured via plastic injection molding, stamping, machining, extrusion, and related processes. Work with manufacturing to consider high volume assembly processes in design concepts.

  • Help ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, and international standards.

  • Provide technical feasibility assessments.

  • Translate voice of customer (VOC) feedback into engineering design requirements.

  • Help develop specifications, test methodologies, and test equipment to evaluate design concepts.

  • Perform calculations, analyses, and engineering testing to verify the designs. Document results in reports and laboratory notebooks.

  • Create and release engineering drawings, written procedures and Bill of Materials.

  • Process engineering change orders.

  • Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design requirements & diagnose design problems.

  • Collaborate with other departments within Medtronic on development projects.

  • Present technical findings or project status to cross functional teams and management through meeting minutes, design reviews, presentations and other means of communication.

  • Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.

  • May be responsible for the transfer from R&D to manufacturing.

    Must Have: Minimum Requirements
    Education Required
    B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree


    Years of Experience
    7+ with BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree
    5+ with MS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree
    Nice to Have


  • Experience 3D modeling software, i.e. SolidWorks and/or ProEngineer

  • Experience designing and developing assembly processes and mechanical assemblies

  • Experience developing and characterizing assembly processes

  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) practices

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects

  • Experience creating technical, written content

  • Demonstrated data analysis skills

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and creating Bill of Materials

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience designing and developing electromechanical assemblies

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and methodologies

  • Effective problem-solving skills

  • High degree of initiative and self-motivation

  • Experience solving ambiguous problems

  • Experience with the design and manufacture of medical devices

  • Experience in product design and development in an R&D environment

  • Formal training in DRM Greenbelt or Blackbelt

  • Ability to use structural finite elements software such as Cosmos or Ansys

  • Experience in plastic part design and injection molding
