Entry-level Instrumentation, Controls & Automation Engineer at Woodard and Curran in St Charles, Missouri

Posted in General Business 30+ days ago.

Type: Full-Time

Job Description:

At Woodard & Curran, there’s nothing we enjoy more than an engineering challenge. We handle a wide range of water and environmental issues—solving complex problems with creativity and tenacity. That’s how we make a difference to our clients, people, and planet. Our company was founded on a simple concept: provide a safe and enjoyable place to work with opportunity, integrity, and commitment, and we will attract talented people. Those people are at the heart of our firm, solving some of the most pressing water and environmental challenges for our clients.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will join a strong team of motivated individuals and contribute to the successful completion of industrial control system implementation projects for our municipal and industrial water and wastewater clients on a regional and national basis. As part of our team, the candidate will be asked to interface with clients, consultants, design staff and other stakeholders to understand their process, instrumentation and controls requirements to produce deliverables associated with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Typical implementation tasks include:

  • Participate in site investigations to gather information about the client’s systems, equipment and instruments to enter into management software and to develop project plans and cost estimates to proactively maintain and upgrade the system.

  • Develop process logic for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in the monitoring and control of water and wastewater treatment systems.

  • Design graphical screens that represent process equipment and instrumentation in the human machine interface (HMI) software packages used by our clients.

  • Design graphical screens for the operator interface terminals (OITs) utilized in our SCADA systems.

  • Create automated reports, via specialized reporting software to collect process information monitored by the SCADA system for use by the client or submission to regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in the installation (oversight of contractors and guidance in wiring terminations), checkout and modification of the field wiring associated with the equipment and instruments connected to the SCADA system.

  • Configure and calibrate instrumentation, including level, pressure, flow, temperature, process analyzers and more, and connecting to the SCADA system.

  • Configure and commission industrial networking hardware, including Ethernet switches, wireless access points and licensed frequency radios.

  • Participate in the testing and startup of the process equipment, instruments and SCADA system to ensure the SCADA system monitors and controls the equipment as intended.

  • Train operations personnel on the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of the SCADA system hardware, software and installation.

  • Participate in QA/QC activities for both the design deliverables produced by the design team and the code developed by the controls team.

To be successful as a member of our team, the candidate should exhibit these traits:

  • Able to contribute in a team environment, but also able to work independently – we come together a lot to share ideas and ways to work efficiently, but we also must be able to work alone and bring back the results.

  • Have strong communication skills (oral and written) – you’re the eyes and ears in the field and much of your career success is dependent on how effectively you communicate your observations to project managers, engineers and other stakeholders. Successful engineers are incredibly focused on their projects but are not shy about initiating communication when necessary.  They also develop the ability to “see the big picture” and appreciate the varied interests that stakeholders hold in the outcome of projects.  Effective communication is crisp, succinct and is not considered complete until the receiver acknowledges they have received and understand the sender’s (your) message.

  • Possess strong organizational skills – tasks and information are going to come at you fast, so you need to be able to take good notes and keep track of your assignments.

  • Attention to detail – as in many engineering disciplines, paying attention to the smallest details is critical.

  • Self-motivated and self-starting – our team is composed of engineers who take the initiative, and have an unmatched work ethic to deliver high quality projects and solve our clients’ problems.

  • Not afraid to ask questions – this may seem obvious but is more difficult than many anticipate.

As Woodard & Curran continues to grow its national footprint, we increase our opportunities to work with clients from all areas of the United States. Because of this, the candidate must be flexible for 50% travel in the New England region and nationwide. Travel will predominantly consist of day trips with the occasional overnight assignment.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering or associated field

  • 0-1 years’ experience in an industrial or electrical environment either as an intern, engineer or consultant

  • Experience with PLC programming (Allen Bradley PLC experience a bonus)

  • Experience developing HMI projects

  • Aptitude in solving programming, electrical or mechanical problems

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Access experience is a bonus)

  • Experience with AutoCAD drafting software is a bonus

Woodard & Curran is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

Woodard & Curran is a Drug Free Work Place.

Individuals with Disabilities and Protected Veterans are encouraged to apply.
