The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) is a large complex teaching, research, and clinical department. The mission of the Department is to improve the health of people using approaches based in epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, and behavioral science through research, educational programs, clinical programs, public service, and policy development.

Responsibilities

This highly independent full time, career position is within the NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Core Center (EHSC) and located in the Department of Public Health Sciences.The Environmental Health Sciences Core Center at UC Davis, one of more than 20 NIEHS Core Centers, advances scientific research; fosters interdisciplinary collaborations; promotes community engagement; facilitates translation of research; and provides support and mentoring to new EHS researchers. EHSC has seventy-one members, spanning seven colleges/schools at UC Davis and engages stakeholders across California with an emphasis on the San Joaquin/Central Valley and areas affected by wildfires. EHSC is comprised of: Exposure Core; Integrated Health Sciences Facility Core; Community Engagement Core; Pilot Projects Program and an Administrative Core.

This position directs the activities of the entire EHSC and manages and supervises the work of all staff in the Administrative Core. This position has a high level of independence and decision-making authority related to program activities, staffing, and budget matters. This position is responsible for both short and long-term strategic planning; overseeing the center budget; fostering collaborative relationships at UC Davis and across the region; developing and implementing center programs; and seeking additional funding. Research projects affiliated with, potentially having external funding, EHSC, such as Disaster Research Response projects, are also managed by this position; examples include time-sensitive projects launched in the aftermath of major wildfire events. This position reports directly to the EHSC Center Director, Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto.

Required Qualifications

* Demonstrated experience creating long term vision and strategic planning to determine areas of improvement and programmatic success.

* Demonstrated experience exhibiting a high level of diplomacy in facilitating relationships and meetings with stakeholders, donors, and government officials.

* Demonstrated experience providing sound recommendations continually to faculty, steering committee, and external advisory boards.

* Demonstrated extensive experience managing public health programs or other large research centers.

* Demonstrated experience prioritizing programmatic initiatives, delegating responsibilities, and ensuring programmatic success.

* Demonstrated experience directing large Center and grant budgets.

* Knowledge of the principles and practices of research management to manage complex research programs effectively and ethically.

* Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary faculty teams to achieve common goal.

* Demonstrated supervisory experience including conflict resolution, team building, and promoting professional development.

* Excellent public speaking and writing skills in English.

* Demonstrated experience identifying grant and funding opportunities and navigating submission requirements

* Demonstrated experience facilitating academic-private sector or government collaborations, including federally funded research projects

* Excellent organizational skills to set priorities and meet deadlines; maintain a high level of productivity; and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

* Master s degree and/or equivalent experience and training highly preferred

* Experience with California environmental health initiatives by government (state, county, local), private sector, and non-profit organizations.

* Experience with health status of vulnerable populations, particularly in the California Central Valley, other underserved groups or regions, or wildfire-affected areas.

* Demonstrated knowledge of federal grant funding regulations; human subject research guidelines; and UC Davis procedures and policies

* Demonstrated success obtaining research grant funding.

Special Requirements

* Frequent night, weekend, and overtime work required to meet program objectives and deadlines.

* Required overnight and weekend travel for national conferences, presentations, and board meetings to promote EHSC programs, disseminate findings, and educate governmental representatives and inform public policy.

* Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
