POSITION DESCRIPTION

Practice Specialists (PS) are registered professional nurses who have graduate preparation (Master s or Doctorate) in nursing. Practice Specialists are expert clinicians in a specialized area of nursing practice. This position is for our Total Joint Program

In addition to providing direct patient care, Practice Specialists influence care outcomes by providing expert consultation for nursing staffs and by implementing improvements in health care delivery systems. The PS is accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies. The PS is responsible for maintaining current professional knowledge and competencies and contributing to the advancement of nursing at the unit/system, local, state and/or national.

Responsibilities:

* Assists and recommends protocols and guidelines for best practice treatment of total joint replacement patients across the continuum of care.

* Oversees the tracking process for data related to throughput of total joint replacement patients and provides data to the Total Joint Program Clinical Team, Department of Orthopedics, & Orthopedic Performance Improvement (PI) Committee to initiate changes as appropriate and to improve outcomes.

* Attends and participates in the Dept. of Orthopedics & Orthopedic PI Committee meetings

* Works with the orthopedic surgeons to assure continuity in care of all total joint replacement patients and quality outcomes

* Assists in the development of strategic plans for the growth of Orthopedic Services

* Works closely with the orthopedic surgeons offices to assure optimal continuity of care from the pre-hospital encounter to hospital.

* Educates nursing, ancillary staff on best practices in the treatment of total joint replacement patients. Develop education for all new employees regarding the total joint program and Disease Specific Care Certification.

* Conducts total joint replacement research studies as appropriate to facilitate care

* Work closely with Quality department to assure metrics are in place to show continuous improvement in the care of the total joint replacement patient for CMS/Joint Commission (JC) data reporting.

* Act as a resource internally and in the community regarding educating others about the orthopedic patient, to include total joint replacement.

* Represents the hospital at local, regional and national level related to best practices for total joint replacement patients

* Assures compliance with all Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory agency performance standards/guidelines.

* Performs other duties as reasonably requested or otherwise necessary to properly assist the operations of the Total Joint Program

* Responsible for implementing and coordinating services and activities related to the Total Hip and Knee Replacement certification.

* Chairs the Total Joint Program Clinical Team meeting, developing minutes, assigning tasks to committee members, and ensuring proper follow up

* Works with clinical staff in ensuring standards are met with regard to the Total Hip and Knee Replacement JC certification.

* Facilitates and evaluates the quality of nursing care as it relates to total joint replacement patients.

* Provides feedback to immediate supervisor on methods to improve compliance with the Total Joint Replacement program requirements.

* Demonstrates knowledge of Total Joint Replacement certification in daily work.

* Demonstrates understanding of principles of quality management and performance improvement in daily work.

* Reviews Total Joint Replacement certification standards to ensure facility compliance on an on-going basis.

* Member of National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) or a society focused on the management and care of the total joint replacement patient.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

* Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

* Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state of Georgia

* Current BLS and ACLS (as appropriate)

* Current NRP (Perinatal/NICU only)

* Master in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice from an NLN accredited program

* Preferable: Certification in area of clinical specialty

* Preferable: At least one year of clinical nurse specialist experience or like position

* Preferable: Currently authorized to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Georgia Board of Nursing

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Yes

WORK HOURS: 8a-5p, M-F only

WEEKEND REQUIREMENTS: No

ON-CALL REQUIREMENTS: No.
