SUMMARY

Coordinates and manages all facets of the quarry operation including production and maintenance of all equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under general supervision with specified policies, practices, and objectives.  Refers questionable items to supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Exercises supervision over employees working in the quarry department including supervisor, miner operator, haul truck drivers, and mechanics. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Plans, coordinates, and maintains quarry costs and productivity within acceptable levels.

  • Plans, coordinates, and directs mobile mechanic shop operations.

  • Conducts and/or participates in quarry department safety meetings and safety inspections of work areas.

  • Supervises, evaluates job performance, and maintains specified records on employees.

  • Ensures that all quarry activities are properly conducted and comply with all safety and environmental standards and regulations.

  • Maintain a very high level of knowledge of all permits pertaining to the mining property.

  • Maintains environmental records and specified records of quarry and mining activities.

  • Troubleshoots belts or stacker issues and safely gets them back up and running quickly to minimize lost production.

  • Proactively identifies and resolves emerging problems with equipment or production

  • Coordinate emergency evacuation of all quarry staff as required.

  • Direct activities of all applicable contractors.

  • Supervises and monitors all preventive maintenance and repairs performed by mechanics on shift.

  • Enter applicable work requests for repairs as needed.

  • Prepares shift report and other specified paperwork as requested by management.

  • Interact with production, maintenance and quality control departments to ensure a teamwork approach therefore promoting a good working relationship.

  • Enforce company policies; recommend and administer discipline.

  • Handles employee relations problems as they arise.

  • Strategically plans short and long terms goals for quarry operations to meet the anticipated production levels.

  • Assists with preparation of annual budgets and specifications on purchased equipment.

  • Manage and create capex projects based on plant needs.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

           

Knowledge of quarry operations and processes.

Familiar with MSHA/OSHA regulations, safe work practices and hazard recognition

Familiar with basic air, water, and waste regulations

Understands of QA/QC processes as they apply to mechanical, electrical, and mobile maintenance processes and procedures

Knowledge of departmental budgeting and forecasting

Knowledge of workplace rules and regulations enforcement

Experience with working with a collective bargaining unit

Ability to follow a mining plan and contract out mine planning resources.

Familiar with quarry processing equipment such as crushers, belt conveyors, dust collectors etc. along with an understanding of the mechanical and electrical principals to safely operate that equipment

Familiar with mobile fleet operating practices and maintenance on front end loaders, haul trucks, bulldozers, graders, water trucks, etc.

Familiar with preventative maintenance, proactive maintenance and reliability centered maintenance principles and practices

Familiar with surveying principles and practices

Skills needed include communication, decision making, strategic planning, troubleshooting, supervisory and organization skills.  

Ability to move around all plant areas, some of which are only accessible by foot.

Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.  Must communicate effectively in both written and verbal terms.  Must be computer literate.

Work requires considerable physical exertion such as frequently climbing ladders and stairs, bending, and walking over rough and slippery surfaces.  Exposure to temperatures above 100-degree Fahrenheit and exposure to all weather conditions. 

Education

High school graduation or equivalent. Some college preferred.

Experience

Two years or more experience performing similar or related duties
