Position Description:
This Senior Financial Analyst position resides within the Kinder Morgan IT Department, reporting to the VP of Business Systems. The successful candidate will be working for one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America and will be responsible for the IT department's accounting and planning functions. Our department develops and supports IT solutions for the business that operates approximately 84,000 miles of natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, and carbon dioxide (CO2) pipelines and over 150 terminals to store and handle various chemicals and other products.
Primary purpose:
Coordinate with Information Technology Directors, Vice Presidents, and the CIO to provide and accumulate accurate and timely projected financial information and related analysis and statistics for support in the strategic and tactical decision-making process. Must be comfortable working in both accounting and planning roles for the department.
Essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Coordination and preparation of weekly expense forecasts and analysis of capital projects.

  • Coordination and preparation of monthly expenses and financial results and analysis for presentation to senior management.

  • Coordination of monthly accruals.

  • Monitoring of monthly accounting close and verification of results at both an aggregate and detail cost type/account level.

  • Monitoring and analyzing reports, researching variances, and providing explanations.

  • Coordination and preparation of quarterly earnings reports and reconciliations.

  • Coordination and preparation of monthly actuals schedules and analysis of headcount, labor/non-labor, and capital budgets.

  • Coordination and preparation of time-sensitive annual budget schedules and activities starting in May and proceeding through Oct/Nov.

  • Provide accurate and timely projected financial information and related statistics for support in the strategic and tactical decision-making process.

  • Interface with all levels of management to obtain data and information necessary to complete duties.

  • Knowledge of AFE's (Authorization for Expenditure) primarily for IT department.

  • Liaison between corporate accounting and planning groups and the IT Department.

  • Assisting with entering invoices and expense reports into A/P System, as needed.

  • Assisting IT department with coding of invoices.

  • Preparation and analysis of governmental and joint venture reports.

  • Work on special projects as needed.

  • Assist with validation and reconciliation of PCARD (Purchasing Card) statements

  • Assist in the development of reports and systems to help automate financial functions within the department.

Minimum requirements:
Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in business related field, preferably Accounting or Finance.
Experience / specific knowledge:

  • 3-5 years' experience in accounting or financial analysis and planning.

  • Extensive experience in performing detailed financial variance analysis.

  • Extensive experience managing both expense and capital budgets

  • Experience in computerized accounting systems, financial modeling, budgets, operations analysis, and management reporting.

  • Detailed understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial statements, and the accounting process.

  • Advanced Excel skills.

  • Ability to work independently to understand, design, and create complex models and reports is essential.

  • Must have the skills to communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely in both oral and written form.

  • Ability to handle, prioritize, and execute multiple tasks.

  • Must possess problem-solving skills and the ability to develop solutions.

  • Critical thinking, understand what is in the numbers, and how they interrelate.

  • Must exhibit professionalism and commitment to company values.

  • Must be able to work with a team, take direction from management, meet deadlines, be detail-oriented, and committed to producing a quality product.

  • Must be able to work under intense time pressure with multiple deadlines and changing priorities and effectively interface with other financial personnel throughout Kinder Morgan.

  • Quick to assume responsibilities; must possess strong organizational skills.

  • Must be flexible and able to work overtime as required.

Above the minimum requirements, not required but advantageous in this position:

  • MBA / CPA

  • Experience with Essbase

  • Experience with IT related costs and budgets (labor, outside services, software, hardware, maintenance, telecom expenses, etc.)

  • Experience with Lawson financial systems
