DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION
The Conservation Aquaculture Research Team (CART), based at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UCSB, in partnership with California Sea Grant and with support from the Ocean Protection Council, is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position as part of its effort to develop a strategic action plan for aquaculture in the State of California. The position will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, California.

BACKGROUND
The State of California, through the Ocean Protection Council (OPC), has initiated a process to develop and eventually implement a strategic action plan for expanding aquaculture. The Conservation Aquaculture Research Team (CART) based at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) will be working in close coordination with California Sea Grant to engage stakeholders, synthesize the state of knowledge around aquaculture planning, and develop a user-informed draft action plan. This draft plan will then be used to inform a second, extensive round of stakeholder engagement to refine and finalize the plan. The final action plan will be presented in 2023.
This postdoctoral researcher will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, California and will support and lead components of the work plan to develop the user-informed strategic action plan. The position will be embedded within CART and the broader NCEAS community, as well as the Halpern and Froehlich research labs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This postdoctoral researcher will lead synthesis and analysis of scenarios for aquaculture growth in California, and vulnerability of aquaculture to climate change.
Support review of literature and writing of components for the action plan.
Engage with stakeholder and scientific advisory committees.

RESIDENCY AT NCEAS:
NCEAS is located in scenic downtown Santa Barbara, California. The Center is known for fostering interaction and collaboration, a characteristic that leads to the success of its visiting scientists. NCEAS has a growing and thriving community of postdocs, resident scientists, and analysts, and a frequent influx of leading scientists and practitioners from around the world participating in working group projects across a diverse range of initiatives. We expect that postdocs will contribute their knowledge, interests, and enthusiasm to the intellectual atmosphere. NCEAS strives to create an adaptive, supportive environment, especially during circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, this postdoctoral researcher may be remote for the beginning of this appointment but would be expected to be in residence as soon as allowable.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic
At the time of application, applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD except the dissertation in aquaculture, environmental policy, environmental science, ecology, fisheries, or a relevant discipline.
Additional
Ph.D. in aquaculture, environmental policy, environmental science, ecology, fisheries, or a relevant discipline at time of hire.
Preferred
Strong analytical skills, database management and data visualization
Strong publication record
Ability to review and synthesize large amounts of literature and complex information
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational skills
Ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team
Experience working with groups outside of academia (industry, NGOs, etc.)

Expected appointment begin date: February 28th, 2021
The initial appointment is for one year with the potential for renewal based on performance and availability of funding.
