DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis ranked #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the world for agricultural sciences and forestry by QS World University Rankings. Through research, education, and outreach, we produce a better world, healthier lives, and an improved standard of living for everyone by addressing critical issues related to agriculture, food systems, the environment, and human and social sciences. Development staff support the college by generating philanthropic support to build on this excellence.

We will be filling two Senior Director of Development positions in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the concentrations of each are below:

The Senior Director of Development for our Agricultural Sciences Division will build a portfolio with prospects and donors who have degrees and/or interest in Animal Science, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Entomology and Nematology, Plant Sciences, Plant Pathology, and Viticulture and Enology. The Senior Director of Development will focus on new identification and cultivation activities more specifically in the Department of Viticulture and Enology.

This is an exciting time in the history of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. The department s mission is to supply knowledge and trained professionals to the grape and wine industries. At the same time, department faculty work with the wine industry to further strengthen their research efforts, creating a portfolio of research projects, from basic to applied, in which the industry can invest.

The Senior Director of Development for the Human and Social Sciences Division will build a portfolio with prospects and donors who have degrees and/or interest within Agricultural and Resources Economics, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Food Science and Technology. The Senior Director of Development will focus on new identification and cultivation activities more specifically in the Department of Agricultural and Resources Economics.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics receives national and international recognition for high quality faculty and for the strength of its undergraduate and graduate programs. The department is home to 25 teaching and research faculty and five Cooperative Extension specialists This is an opportunity to join one of the premier UC Davis units to take their existing programs to the next level and build out a more mature program overall.

JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the Managing Executive Director of Development, the Senior Director of Development is responsible for generating philanthropic gifts for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Senior Directors of Development identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events to cultivate, solicit, and steward, individual, corporate, and foundation donor prospects.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Stand for extended periods of time during events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

* Provide own transportation to travel to donor visits throughout the state, off-site meetings, and events.

* Work in area where there is constant traffic and noise from office machines, telephones, and conversations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum:

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

* Minimum of four years of professional or volunteer fundraising experience involving major gifts, including knowledge of proven cultivation and solicitation techniques for gifts of six-figures or higher.

* Successful track record developing strategic relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations.

* Knowledge of a variety of gift vehicles including in-kind gifts, gifts of securities, life income gifts, and deferred gifts.

* Knowledge of and experience with development and fundraising techniques, including prospect identification research, evaluation of historic gift data, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship.

* Organizational, time management and analytical skills to manage multiple fund raising activities and initiatives; and to work independently as well as an effective team member to realize complex goals and objectives through strategic planning.

* Skills to provide leadership and appropriate support to deans, faculty, volunteers, trustees, and development colleagues in carrying out their responsibilities.

Preferred:

* Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to interact with diverse constituencies and develop collaborative working relationships needed to accomplish organizational goals.

* Higher Education major gift fundraising experience; experience in planned and endowment giving.

* Knowledge of subject matter covered by faculty in CA&ES as well as of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, etc.

* Political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.
