Overview:
The Monolith Engineering and Manufacturing (MEM) Group of the Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section initiates and oversees the design, procurement and construction of neutron source related components. The team manages an on-site machine shop and interacts with subcontracted vendors to supply and produce major source-system components including the inner reflector plug, the proton beam window, and the target module. This position reports to the Monolith Engineering and Manufacturing Group Leader in NTE.

The Manufacturing Systems Engineer will develop and implement tools and internal systems for the efficient planning, execution, and tracking of complex equipment procured and fabricated by the MEM group in support of SNS operations. The position will work closely and build ties with external neutron science collaborators to benchmark world-class systems and methodologies for procuring and executing complicated manufacturing processes.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpret design, procurement, and quality assurance requirements from 2D mechanical drawings, 3D CAD models, specifications, standards, codes, and other sources for complex manufacturing projects
- Develop manufacturing plans and design unique solutions for complex manufacturing problems
- Develop, write, and implement various internal standards to be used by the MEM and other groups for specifying various manufacturing process in the design, procurement, and manufacturing stages for neutron source related equipment
- Work with group members to develop and implement MEM systems for planning, tracking, executing, and documenting manufacturing projects handled by the MEM group
- Evaluate and develop the capabilities of outside vendors, typically machine shops
- Develop and expand internal manufacturing capabilities for the production on neutron source related components and equipment (both within the MEM group and within the ORNL Facilities and Operations organization)
- Benchmark manufacturing management process used by similar facilities and industries and adopt those practices into the MEM group standard working procedures
- Serve as the Technical Project Officer for procuring and manufacturing complex neutron source systems and components

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical, aerospace, industrial, or other engineering discipline
- 2 or more years of relevant engineering experience
- Experience and familiarity with machine and fabrication shop operation and manufacturing processes
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must have excellent project planning and management skills
- 3D CAD and 2D mechanical design (Creo experience is preferred)
- Must have a working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5) and other design standards and processes

Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree or certification in engineering, logistics, project management, or business administration
- Experience with machine shop management software for creating project estimates, work plans, and shop routers
