The Lab Engineer/Systems Engineer is responsible for managing and supporting the virtual and physical infrastructure for Microsoft enterprise systems in the Azure cloud and in physical servers. This also includes cross supporting the server operating systems and Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) / Government Off the Shelf (GOTS) applications hosted within the lab environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Work under general supervision and usually reports to a supervisor, though a certain degree of ingenuity and flexibility is required.
  • Support the Department of State's (DOS) Information Resource Management (IRM) Messaging Systems Office (MSO) Division.
  • Responsible for managing and supporting the virtual and physical infrastructure for Microsoft enterprise systems in the Azure cloud and in physical servers
  • Support the server operating systems and COTS/GOTS applications hosted within the lab environment
  • Manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure in the Azure cloud and in physical servers
  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools
  • Ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability
  • Implement quality assurance reviews and evaluation of new and existing hardware/software
  • Lead migration and implementation of new software, system upgrades, evaluates patches, resolves software related problems, performing security scans
  • Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools
  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work to implement those fixes
  • Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies
  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on tasks
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd level support
  • Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
  • Work within the Government Configuration Management and QA processes

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position will not have supervisory or management authority

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or similar work experience
  • Ten (10) years relevant experience, or MS with seven (7) years of prior relevant experience
  • Microsoft Azure Government and/or Microsoft Azure Commercial cloud experience
  • Experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting Windows Server based environments and administration and performance tuning of .Net application stacks
  • Experience managing hyper converged platforms and cloud and server based monitoring systems as well as scripting
  • Seven (7) years of IT architecture/engineering experience
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of Azure/Microsoft experience
  • Extensive experience with Azure Cloud Platforms
  • Hands-on experience with tools for system management, monitoring, automation, and agile development

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Nice to have and not mandatory: MCSA, MCSE, Cloud+, Azure certs
  • Top-Secret Clearance Desired, Secret is required
