Overview:
The Target Engineering group of the SNS Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section of the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting the SNS target system and several of its auxiliary systems. These systems include a mega-watt class mercury loop and remote handling systems. The design and development engineer's primary role is to support these systems and members of the group by leading development projects and performing mechanical design. This position requires both leadership and project organizational skills as well as personal technical skills.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify critical gaps in existing target system designs. Where existing tools and methods can close the gaps, leads a team to develop and execute the needed changes. Where existing capabilities are insufficient, creates and carries out plans for the development and research required to deliver the missing knowledge or tools.
- Deliver complex and unique mechanical designs that translate into working, reliable hardware. Work is guided by group goals, policies, and strategies. Advises management in the development of these guides.
- Work independently to perform complex technical work, including design and analysis.
- Lead matrixed teams to complete complex development and design projects.
- Develop relationships with collaborators and stakeholders across NScD, in other directorates, and outside ORNL.
- Work to implement state of the art methods and approaches in the organization and shares expertise and new developments through mentoring and training.
- Deliver high-quality papers, presentations, and reports. Shares results of development and designs to support industry and further R&D.
- Work with other disciplines and researchers to develop plans and funding proposals to transform discoveries and approaches into working production-grade systems.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics
- Comply with ORNL environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:
- BS in mechanical engineering or a related field
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in design and/or research and development
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical design, analysis, and development
- Demonstrated hands-on experience using CAD and CAE tools
- Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team
- Excellent problem solving and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
- MS or Ph.D in mechanical engineering or a related field, which can reduce the number of required years of experience
- Experience with Creo and Windchill
- Familiarity with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
- Experience with engineering analysis techniques including computational fluid dynamics and/or explicit dynamic analysis
- Knowledge of design for high radiation environments
- Experience in writing funding proposals
