POSITION SUMMARY:
The laboratory phlebotomist I is responsible for pre analytical processes including the performance of a variety of phlebotomy functions including specimen collection and sample processing in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Collects specimens in accordance with laboratory policies, reporting any variations to the supervisor. Functions are completed effectively and accurately ensuring the department's needs are met in a timely manner. Provides effective service excellence for each patient encounter ensuring positive outcomes. Possesses strong communication skills, high attention to detail, and can be relied upon for dependable and consistent work output.
Work Schedule: Day Shift/ 6:00am-2:30pm/ Fulltime/ Weekend and holidays rotation required

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
* Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate technique to maintain the integrity of the specimen
* Provides excellent customer service and delivers a positive experience to all patients
* Prioritizes collections and transports specimens to meet established turnaround times
* Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including but not limited to registering patients, processing cancelations and add-on tests
* Accurately enters manual orders from licensed independent practitioners into the hospital information system and reviews activated physician s order in the system
* Works collaboratively with all staff, contributing to promote and foster a positive and professional work atmosphere
* Supports and maintains quality improvement through a program of total process control; performs various aspects of problem recognition, resolution and documentation
QUALIFICATIONS:
* High School diploma/GED
* 1 year phlebotomy experience or phlebotomy certification course completion
* Rigid accuracy in identification & reporting of numbers and names
* Ability to enter computer data into Laboratory Information System
* Ability to use automated instruments and mechanical apparatus with appropriate training
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
* __X__ Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
* __X__ Category 1: Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
* Above average manual dexterity and visual acuity
WORK ENVIRONMENT
* Works in a medical laboratory environment with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials
