Type: Full Time

Job Description:

Requisition Id4206
Job title: Mechanical Engineer
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.
The Machine Dynamics Group of the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) of ORNL has a successful history supporting projects in the centrifuge science and isotope enrichment areas. Opportunities in these areas are expected to grow over the next few years, requiring additional qualified staff to successfully perform these challenging and nationally important projects.
We are looking to hire a mechanical engineer. In this position you will perform design, analysis, and testing of isotope separation equipment. You will work in a collaborative team environment to create isotope separation equipment to support DOE's isotope separation missions.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, installation, testing, and performance evaluation of high-speed rotating equipment and supporting subsystems will be this position's main activities. These activities will include using rotor analysis and design codes to predict rotor and suspension dynamic performance as part of either the rotor/suspension design or the test measurement evaluation process. This includes acquiring and implementing the appropriate instrumentation and software to effectively evaluate the performance of rotors, suspensions, and other related components. These activities will include working closely with analysts to validate rotor and subassembly models to ensure accurate prediction of performance. Lastly, dynamic testing and analysis of structures will be part of the position's responsibilities. Team members are expected to collaborate with colleagues and be able to effectively communicate testing results.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The position requires an MS or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science and Mechanics, or a closely related engineering or science discipline.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A candidate with an active Q clearance is preferred with experience in the following areas:
- An understanding of mechanical system dynamics, including a knowledge of natural frequencies, critical speeds, mode shapes, and damping effects.
- Experience with rotating equipment.
- Experience with mechanical system models with an emphasis on their use for design or troubleshooting.
- Experience with and knowledge of both hydrodynamic and rolling element bearings, seals, and squeeze film dampers.
- Experience with mechanical system measurements, including instrumentation, signal processing, and data acquisition.
- Experience in dynamic testing and the use of the resulting measurements to characterize mechanical systems.
- Experience with MATLAB.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
