We are pleased to offer a 6 month full-time internship starting in or about January 2021 at BMW of North America, LLC. 

The Engineering Department of BMW of North America, LLC is offering an internship for a talented intern with a strong background in Engineering or Data Science. The topics include, but are not limited to: electric vehicle (EV) charging, renewable electricity integration with managed EV charging, and EV customer behavior analysis. Many tasks may require analytical skills as well as experience with typical data analysis tools like Excel, SAS, python, MATLAB, etc.

This position will involve working with our engineers based in Munich and external partners in the U.S. to research automotive functions and features of the future. Besides the technical background, strong communication skills and self-motivated working abilities are essential for this internship since these qualities are essential to working in the collaborative environment of the BMW Mountain View Technology Office. In addition, interdisciplinary interaction is highly welcome and will be supported by the team with advanced degrees in a variety of technical subjects.

Note: This is a full-time 6-month internship. Interested applicants should explore options with their faculty advisors / department to take time off from their studies prior to applying for the position.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct analysis on complex, large vehicle datasets to help BMW better understand the travel and charging behavior of electric vehicle owners.


• Develop new insights and quantitative measures to evaluate the benefits of electric vehicle smart charging and renewable energy integration with electric vehicle charging.


• Create presentations and data visualizations that communicate your insights and learnings to BMW management and external stakeholders.

• Experience and confidence in collaborating with internal and external colleagues of diverse skills and motivations, including internationally.


• Conscientious, responsible, self-motivated, ability to work independently and as a part of a team.


• Proficiency in Microsoft Office including strong Excel and PowerPoint skills and simulation software such as MATLAB. Advanced programming skills in JAVA and/or Python. Strong knowledge in database programming such as Excel VBA, MATLAB, or IT background with technical interest.

• Experience with techno-economic analysis and modeling, cost engineering, and/or business case development.
