POSITION SUMMARY:

The objective of the Infection Prevention & Control Program is to minimize the probability of transmission of infection, thus providing a better and safer hospital for its patients and personnel. This position is responsible for integrating clinical findings, laboratory results and other diagnostic tests to determine the presence of infections utilizing the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control.

 

The Infection Preventionist promotes staff adherence with Infection Control and prevention processes and policies via education and training and ensures compliance with the hospital’s medical staff by-laws, rules and regulations, policies and regulatory standards. Serves as a clinical resource to improve patient outcomes.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: 


  1. Develops, coordinates and manages the review and assessment functions of the infection prevention and control program.

  2. Initiates, develops and delivers education programs on infection control and prevention for staff development and regulatory agency compliance.

  3. Represents the infection prevention and control program through membership on hospital and medical staff committees.  

  4. Serves as liaison and interfaces with all regulatory agencies, and the health care community concerning infection prevention issues to assure hospital compliance with infection prevention regulations.

  5. Performs targeted surveillance and prepares reports and statistics on healthcare-associated infection rates.

  6. Develops and promotes consistent application of infection prevention policies and procedures.

  7. Supports emergency management activities and EOC through participation on environmental rounds, bioterrorism and patient influx planning, emergency response drills.

  8. Identifies community and hospital acquired infections as defined by the Infection Control Committee. 9. Identifies situations that may present an infectious hazard to patients, staff, or visitors. Take appropriate actions to eliminate hazards. 10. Identifies communicable disease cases to report to the Southern Nevada Health District per established policies.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:



  • ASN or BSN, Masters in Public Health, Certified Medical Technologist or degree in related healthcare field required.




  • If hired without current Bachelor's Degree, candidate would agree to complete within three (3) years of hire.



Experience:



  • Two years’ experience in hospital setting




  • Disease surveillance experience in a public health setting




  • Experience in Infection Prevention and Infection Control




  • Experience in education and statistical analysis desirable




  • Computer skills and research



License:



  • If RN must have current license by the Nevada State Board of Nursing to practice as a Registered Nurse, Medical Technologist must have a Nevada State license, or National Licensure as a Medical Technologist




  • Certification in Infection Control/Prevention or ability to sit for a Certification in Infection Control within two years after hire date required




  • American Heart Association certified BLS certification required



Skills:



  • Completion of recognized course in Fundamentals of Infection Control
