Tax Senior Managers have deep expertise in state & local taxes within various industries and functional areas and is a technical subject matter expert in business activity and/or transactional taxes and they are a resource to the entire firm and, in particular, senior members of the firm. Significant time is spent providing technical support to multiple engagements by reviewing state tax returns and other deliverables, and consulting or research on specific topics in which they are uniquely qualified. They are substantially involved in maintaining and improving tax department's infrastructure and operations and are invested in the development and training of tax professionals both within their niche and firmwide.

  • Recognized as an industry, functional or key subject matter expert that utilized as a firm-wide resource in the following manner:
    • Perform technical review of engagement work papers, tax returns, provisions and other related deliverables for engagements throughout the firm
    • Provide consultation on business and/or personal transactions (if applicable), and the related tax implications, consequences and treatment
    • Review or conduct high level research of complex or emerging tax issues and prepare memorandums to support conclusions
  • Manage larger and complex engagements and workflow of multiple clients and related deliverables to minimize risk and surprises, maximize engagement economics, meet internal and external deadlines and develops less experienced engagement personnel, primarily managers and supervisors
  • Train and develop less experienced individuals responsible for engagement management responsibilities, including managing budgets, scheduling and staffing, due date management and client relations
  • Senior tax technical person on the engagement
  • Continually build on technical expertise in taxation by attending continuing professional education courses or utilizing other training resources
  • Keeps current with tax law changes and provide updates and training to the firm's tax practice members
  • Writes articles for firm publications on tax topics including current changes
  • Consults with engagement teams for developing responses to IRS and FTB audits and notices and inquiries from other regulatory and tax authorities
  • Knowledgeable about the services and capabilities of partners and other service lines, and seeks to identify other services that will benefit the client
  • Coordinate receiving information and making decisions about client updates, engagement status and economics, and technical issues
  • Keep the partner informed about client updates, engagement status, and technical issues
  • Develop fee quotes and budgets for partners and engagement teams
  • Preparation of client billings and collection of outstanding accounts
  • Leadership role or substantial participation in developing, improving and maintaining tax department technical resources, business processes and methods
  • Instructor in tax department training programs and meetings related to area of expertise
  • Develop, guide and mentor professionals within the department and niche
  • Meet annual billable hours goal


Required Education and Experience
1. Educational requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting / JD - masters in tax / Tax LLM preferred
  • CPA license

2. Experience requirements
  • 7 years or more of experience in public accounting in taxation or equivalent experience
  • At least 2+ years in a managerial role involving clients and team members
  • Strong selling skills - generating leads, making contacts and securing clients
  • Strong project management and leadership skills including the ability to successfully coach and mentor talented people
  • Technical proficiency in tax software applications
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Superior technical, industry or functional expertise
  • Strong tax research skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Strong project management skills
