Job Description
OBJECTIVES:
The Center for External Innovation (CEI) Business Development (BD) team is Therapeutic Area (TA) aligned across Oncology (ONC), Neuroscience (NS), Rare Disease (RD), and Gastroenterology (GI) and responsible for all Research and Development-stage BD activities at Takeda
CEI’s summer internship program blends real world experience with existing skills acquired through your ongoing educational program. Knowledgeable mentors (at least one senior and one junior BD lead) will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience.
Through direct involvement in a specific BD project (e.g., collaboration or license with an external party) the learning experiences are expected to include: understanding the steps/ process required to advance a BD opportunity within a pharma/ biotech environment; build direct/ hands-on BD experience; interact with and broader, cross-functional deal team to understand key stakeholders and roles/ responsibilities; and ownership of a focused activity required to advance the BD opportunity.
Build a network of relationships inside Takeda and increase communication skills through regular engagement with the deal team and CEI colleagues.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
This summer intern position will be part of Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. CEI. CEI’s mission is to license, acquire, or collaborate with academic centers and biotechnology companies to create and develop ground-breaking new therapeutic treatment options for disease. As an intern, you will be a part of the broader, dynamic CEI organization with exposure to the range of transactions and activities and be part of a deal team for a specific BD project. This will provide the opportunity to observe the broader, cross-functional deal team as they complete due diligence, navigate stakeholder alignment and governance approvals, and negotiate terms with the external party.
Within the deal team, you will be responsible for a focused activity, examples include:
Review of outputs from technical due diligence and formulating how identified risks may link with the contemplated deal structure
Complete assessment of the competitive landscape for a given disease or analysis of similar technologies to determine the innovative/ transformative potential of the asset
Analyzing comparable transactions to inform deal terms and structure
Preparation and review of materials summarizing the opportunity for discussions with key stakeholders
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited university for the semester before and immediately following the internship.
Applicants must be pursuing:
MBA with concentration or prior experience in Business, Healthcare, Finance, or Entrepreneurship
PhD in a biological or similar discipline (e.g., biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, bioengineering, chemistry)
PharmD
MD
or similar graduate-level degree
Experience in each of the following MS Office applications:
MS Outlook - Proficient
MS Word - Proficient
MS Excel - Proficient
MS PowerPoint - Proficient
Must be deadline driven and have a high level of organizational and planning skills
The ideal candidate exhibits strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills; he or she also possesses the ability to work well in teams, effectively manage multiple projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.
Intern pay rate ranges are from $18/hour to $45/hour, depending on students level in their undergraduate or graduate program and level professional experience.
