JOB DESCRIPTION

CHEMIST I

I           BASIC FUNCTION

The primary job function is to perform EPA-compliant chemical testing of various environmental water, wastewater, soil, and solid waste samples and ASTM-compliant testing of various industrial chemicals.    

II         RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Perform timely and accurate analysis of industrial wastewater samples and terminal chemical samples in accordance with laboratory, EPA, and ASTM procedures.

  • Demonstrate continued analytical competence by completing and documenting, with acceptable results, all required QC measurements for all analysis performed in the laboratory.

  • Read and maintain a practical knowledge and understanding of the original EPA and ASTM methods upon which the laboratory procedures are based.

  • Properly document, date, and sign all analytical work according to EPA requirements, ASTM recommendations, and laboratory procedures.

  • Recognize and immediately report analysis irregularities to supervisors.  Participate in remediation as required.

  • Coordinate with other chemists in the laboratory to assure all analysis are completed in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Become knowledgeable of, and participate in, the laboratory and terminal HSSE programs.

  • Comply with OSHA and laboratory requirements for maintaining a safe work environment and execution of safe work practices.  Participate actively in the compliance programs.

  • Comply with EPA and laboratory requirements for laboratory waste disposal.

  • Perform occasional weekend analysis, as required.

  • Perform, on occasion, off-site collection of environmental samples.

  • Perform instrument calibration and maintenance, as required.

III        CAPABILITIES                


  • Learn complex wet and instrumental analytical testing methods for environmental and raw material samples from written and/or verbal instruction.

  • Understand technical writing and apply gained knowledge to analytical procedures and techniques.

  • Recognize irregularities in analysis behavior due to interferences in the sample and irregularities in instrument behavior due to improper set-up or operation.

  • Accurately represent, in both written and verbal presentation, relevant observations made in the conduct of an analysis.

  • Perform basic statistical calculations, including mean, standard deviation, t-test, and linear regression, and understand their meaning and application with respect to accuracy and precision.

  • Ability to accurately enter data in LIMs systems, provide feedback for continuous improvement of databases.

  • Multitask across multiple analysis methods at different stages of completion, without error.

IV        EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related science.

  • Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience in a laboratory setting preferred but not required.

  • Familiarity with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, SW 846 for the Analysis of Solid Waste, and relevant ASTM procedures, preferred.

  • Knowledgeable of IEPA and USEPA requirements for collection and testing of the environmental samples, preferred.

  • Must have excellent organizational and time management skills and be able to work independently and as a team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word).

V         PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical requirements of the job include standing for long periods of time, carrying and transferring products. Must be prepared to preform off-site sampling and testing under all types of weather conditions and often difficult site locations.  Must be able to lift between 10-50 lbs.
