The Impact You'll Make

The Empath Licensed Vocational Nurse provides direct patient care for adult and patients within the LVN scope of practice guidelines in a locked inpatient unit setting. Provides psychoeducational group support, contributes to, supports the therapeutic milieu, and ensures the safety and well-being of the patient population. Participates in the gathering of information, monitors patient progress, and contributes, implements, and documents the individualized patient plan of care. Participates as a member of the clinical interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate care, support, and resources to all internal/external customers and on-going commitment to quality.

Additional responsibilities include, but not limited to:


  • Collaborates with doctors and staff to provide exceptional care, assisting during exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments.
  • Conducts accurate clinical assessments; collects, synthesizes, and accurately analyzes patient data from multiple and sometimes conflicting sources to develop the patient's individualized plan of care. Integrates cultural differences in the plan of care.
  • Prepares effective transfer/discharge plans; seeks validation of clinical judgment from more experienced clinicians.
  • Completes Behavioral Health Assessments demonstrating basic knowledge of interviewing, diagnostic, organization, and writing skills within designated timeframe.
  • Provides appropriate disposition recommendations based on assessments and seeks direction as appropriate.
  • Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Prepares, administers, and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications/treatments in accordance with the policy.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Maintains nursing supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels; anticipating needed supplies; communicating with manager to place supply order.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs.

What You Will Bring

Required Experience and Competencies:


  • Minimum education: as required by certification and/or licensure per state and accrediting institution.
  • 2 years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in an acute adult outpatient or inpatient psychiatric unit.
  • Background in psychiatric and medical-surgical illnesses and treatments.
  • Current LVN License in good standing.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Completion of Assaultive Patient training within 1 month of hire.
  • AHA-recognized BLS - Healthcare Provider.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding, knowledge, performance, communication, and documentation of Behavioral Health Assessments, Mental status exams, Suicide Risk Assessments, Psychotropic medications, Insurance authorization/Medical, and Biopsychosocial Assessment.

Preferred Talent Assets:


  • 3+ years of directly related LVN experience in area of specialty.
