We are currently seeking an Associate for our Buildings & Structures Practice in Oakland, CA.  In this role you will work as part of a team to support our consulting work within the electric and gas energy and utility industry.  The work consists of performing management and technical assessments (analysis or testing), incident and root cause investigations, and program development and compliance assessments for energy sector clients under the direction of senior Exponent consultants.


You will be responsible for: 



  • Performing asset management evaluations including asset health, life-cycle cost analysis, and risk assessments

  • Performing incident investigations and root cause evaluations involving design, construction, operation or decommissioning malfunctions

  • Performing change management and process improvement evaluations

  • Preparing technical reports and presentations

  • Preparing technical proposals and pursuing business development, as directed by senior staff

  • Travel to accommodate significant work load at client locations

  • Continued professional development towards establishing professional expertise


You will have the following skills and qualifications: 



  • Ph.D. in an engineering discipline (or M.S. degree with significant industry experience)

  • Background and interest in risk assessment and management of engineered systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and ability to work independently or in multidisciplinary teams

  • Ability to gather information and convey technical conclusions to individuals in engineering, business, and related industry

  • Excellent creative problem-solving ability

  • Detail oriented

  • Background in probabilistic risk and reliability assessments desired

  • Background in asset life cycle cost analysis desired

  • Interest or experience in the engineering aspects of the energy utility industry preferred (electric, gas, generation or renewables)
