POSITION:  Registered Nurse (RN), Oncology

 

POSITION
SUMMARY
:

The RN Oncology will help in the
oncology treatment plan development, testing and analysis with the use of
evidence based practice and the NCCN. The RN Oncology will work side by side
with the department RN Clinical Informaticist, providers, pharmacy, and fellow
nurses during this process. Time will be split between clinical duties and
treatment plan analyst.

 

The Center for
Cancer Care (CCC) staff RN is primarily responsible for adhering to the
hospital's Standards of Patient Care and Policies to deliver safe and quality
patient care. The RN performs all treatments and procedures as outlined in the
Nursing Practice Guidelines located on the FMH portal and applicable regulatory
and professional entities' guidelines, standards, protocols, and procedures within
the scope of RN practice.

 

Within the RN scope of practice; is expected to consistently
demonstrate competent, focused, clinical nursing assessments and history taking
on all new, established and acute care patients in both triage and clinical
care settings. Ability to utilize critical thinking, communication,
problem-solving and decision making skills that promote quality patient care
and positive outcomes across the spectrum of care as it relates to meeting the
needs of the patients.

 

Demonstrates a positive attitude with a focus on teamwork, open
communication, problem resolution all the while maintaining a quiet therapeutic
environment essential to patient satisfaction and optimum therapeutic
experiences for the patients we care for.

 

 

Essential Position Functions : Treatment Plan Analyst:


  1. Maintain current
    and research new oncology treatment plans with the use of evidence based
    practice and the NCCN.


  2. Coordinate
    regular reviews of in use treatment plans.


  3. Stay up to date with evidence based practices.

  4. Play a key role in the planning and implementation of
    new treatment plans prioritizing needs of the
    patient.


  5. Serve as a
    liaison by relaying issues as needed from clinical staff to the RN Clinical
    Informaticist for trouble shooting.


  6. Establish regular
    informational meetings/communication with department administration as it
    relates to treatment plan needs.


  7. Collaborate with the Director to establish department
    specific directives, policies and procedures as they relate to the treatment plans.


  8. Attend
    conferences and seminars as appropriate.


 

Oncology Staff
Nurse
:

 


  1. Supports Departments' customer service
    efforts. Provides service excellence to patients, their families and support persons, medical staff, peers,
    support services and other hospital personnel. Provides immediate and
    satisfactory problem resolution for customer complaints or refers complex
    customer service problems to the Program Director or appropriate person in the
    absence of the Program Director (VP Patient Care Services). Complies with HIPAA guidelines.


  2. Demonstrates knowledge of, and support
    for, hospital Mission and Values Statement, department goals and objectives. Assists
    in the formation and accomplishment of unit goals
    and objectives.


  3. Develops and maintains professional
    relationship with Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIP), peers, patients,
    their families and support persons, as well as collaborative internal and
    external patient care support services.


  4. Participates
    in the department's Performance Improvement program(s).


  5. Actively participates in unit's
    department meetings by contributing insightful evidence based practice (EBP)
    data, and possesses strong receptive
    listening skills.


  6. Attends
    Tumor Board Meetings as patient care assignment(s) permits.


  7. Follows the principles of infection
    control as outlined in the hospital policies and practice guidelines.


  8. Enhances
    professional growth and development through participation in educational
    programs, current literature, in-servicing, and workshops; shows responsibility
    for own professional development and on-going education. Actively pursues oncology
    nursing certification (OCN) after two years of employment.


  9. Is able to conduct a detailed nursing
    assessment focusing on prevention, detection, symptom management, coping and
    learning style readiness.


  10. Obtains health
    information per interviewing, observing, and measuring vital signs and specimen collection.


  11. Completes
    detailed physical assessment and laboratory interpretations prior to
    administering medication according to established standards and/or per protocol/regimen.


  12. Assists LIP's during patient
    examinations and special procedures including bone marrow biopsies and other
    minor surgical procedures routinely conducted in an oncology outpatient setting.


  13. Removes sutures,
    cleans wounds, and applies dressings as directed by an LIP.


  14. Possesses
    and demonstrates strong clinical skills necessary for delivery of quality
    patient care as it relates to the
    management of infusion room patients and their prescribed medications and in
    accordance with established standards of care.


  15. Ability
    to adapt to unpredictable and sometimes stressful patient care scenarios in a
    calm therapeutic manner.


  16. Administers medications and monitors
    for desired, side, and/or adverse
    effects.


  17. Competently
    and safely initiates and manages IV access sites and care of ports of entry for
    IV therapy. Administers injections, IV, IM, SC medications per LIP order and in
    accordance with hospital policy. Performs therapeutic phlebotomies when indicated
    and as per LIP order and in accordance with hospital policy. Monitors IV sites
    for patency, signs and symptoms of infection, infiltration, or extravagation.
    Monitors patient outcomes and documents appropriately in Electronic Health
    Record (EHR) systems.


  18. Maintains
    knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and treat Oncologic Emergencies.


  19. Educates
    patient and support person(s) in collaboration with LIP and other healthcare
    members. Develops individual plans for education, pain management, medication
    toxicity, diet needs, Activities of Daily Living
    (ADL's) and psycho social needs appropriately. Remains current with
    available training and literature regarding care and treatment of the CCC patient.


  20. Makes
    appropriate referrals when necessary to meet patient care needs.


  21. Triages phone calls in a timely manner,
    to include detailed complete assessments specific to patient care needs as
    outlined in treatment plan of care and/or prescribed regimen(s). Understands
    management of high risk patients as it relates to disease specific and/or
    chemotherapy specific complications or adverse events. Reports symptoms and/or
    patient care needs to appropriate LIP and follows through on written
    instructions/orders for patient
    care management, to include documentation in patient EHR.


  22. Manages current EHR desktop documents
    when rotating into the Triage Nurse Role to include, routing test results,
    phone notes, prescription refills etc to appropriate LIP. Follows up with LIP on routed documents in a timely
    manner to establish prompt, appropriate responses for the patient
    population we serve,
    promoting quality patient care, and satisfaction, with the goal of
    maintaining positive patient care experiences.


  23. Documents all patient related activity
    in the EHR including histories, updates,
    phone calls, follow up communication, referrals, lab results, patient
    education, medication updates, preferred pharmacy and any other interactions
    with the patient appropriately. Responds to documentation requirements or
    requests for information as needed for patients participating in clinical protocols.


  24. Selects
    from established current EHR billing coded documents charges for services
    rendered, if applicable.


  25. When
    necessary and as is appropriate delegates clerical related tasks to Office
    Coordinator. Provides support to office staff as needed.


  26. Remains current in understanding of EHR
    upgrades and their application as it relates to patient care and collaborative practice.


  27. Maintains and stocks all clinical areas
    and ensures all instruments are cleaned, sterile, and in good repair. Works
    with Program Director to identify unit needs and patient care requirements.


  28. Demonstrates
    a commitment to containing costs and efficient use of material resources.


  29. Maintains
    a safe therapeutic environment for patients, their families and support
    persons, and staff; corrects hazards promptly.


  30. Remains current in understanding of EHR
    upgrades and their application as it relates to patient care and collaborative practice

Qualifications

Education: 


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree preferred

Experience:


  • At least 5 years of RN related clinical experience, hospital setting preferred

  • Strong working knowledge of project management, analysis skills, computer systems testing training.  Have the ability to prioritize project management as it pertains to HER.

  • Ability to clinically analyze data from the department to identify and resolve problems.

  • Ability to establish and foster working relationships with contacts such as doctor’s offices, hospital administration, vendors, and/or other departments.

 

 

Licensure and Certifications:


  • Registered Nurse (RN) License in NH or valid Compact State License
