Job Description:


Global Fund Banking Portfolio Management roles are responsible for managing all lending and credit aspects for both Venture Capital and Private Equity client relationships. Core responsibility is leading the due diligence process and deal structuring process, and then partnering with the Relationship Management team for the delivery and negotiation of credit products. GFB Portfolio Management owns the underwriting, approval, and closing process. Responsible for proactive portfolio management, including maintaining credit quality and profitability targets, understanding changing risk profiles of their clients and communicating this information and assessment to key stakeholders (internal and external). Remains abreast of market, sector and competitive trends. Develops and delivers insights and points of view on loan types and credit/performance trends.

Provides guidance and oversight or actively engages in structuring, underwriting and closing of new business as well as on proactive portfolio management. Leads development and delivery of insights on loan types and credit/performance trends in sectors/sub-sectors. Engages actively with partners in Relationship Management, Credit Administration and others to ensure alignment of approach. Fosters seamless working relationships across vertical and horizontal teams. Recruits and interviews staff. Makes hiring recommendations. Sets goals and manages the workload of the team. Responsible for developing skills and expertise of team. Manages a team of Directors, Vice Presidents, and Associates responsible for managing all aspects of lending/credit for a wide range of client relationships.


  • Oversees due diligence process, engage with clients and colleagues on structuring and negotiating term sheets, lead underwriting and closing of deals (new and renewals) for clients and prospects.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of borrowing relationships, reviewing information, evaluating risk, and engaging with clients, building relationships with appropriate stakeholders. Communicate internally to recommend and execute on responses to changing situations for clients / across the portfolio broadly. Ensures that portfolio management practices meet SVB standards. Identify opportunities to cross-sell SVB platform.
  • Manages a team of VP's and Associates, providing oversight and guidance on structuring, underwriting, closing and portfolio management and managing workload for group/sector. This includes driving skills and career development for individuals as well as the development and delivery on performance/scalability initiatives.
  • Developing and demonstrating subject matter expertise within the team including market, sector and competitive trends, business models, lending models and making the group more scalable through optimizing how we conduct business and manage the portfolio. This includes attending events and client meetings.

  • Independently lead deal modifications as appropriate.

  • Provides insights/thought leadership on deal types as well as guidance on deal structuring, underwriting and documentation negotiations.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience
  • 10 or more years of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Portfolio management and negotiation experience

Knowledge

  • Excellent credit analysis and portfolio management skills.
  • Good negotiation skills, communication skills and ability to engage with clients effectively and independently.
  • Good knowledge and application of credit policies and risk ratings.

Skills

  • Proven ability to lead due diligence, structuring, underwriting and documentation processes independently for all but the most complex deals.
  • Able to manage portfolio proactively and independently, while exercising proper judgment on when additional guidance and engagement of others is appropriate.
  • Knowledgeable of the development of term sheets/deal structures and provides solid guidance and contributions during the delivery and negotiation process with the client.
  • Able to engineer creative solutions to client needs.
  • Ability to provide guidance to less experienced staff members, enabling them to show improved efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Able to effectively manage resources to optimize processes and outcomes.
