Top Required Skills: Strong grasp of data science (either statistics or computer science or newer AI/ML practice degrees), Strong grasp of algorithms, ability to understand algorithm selections for particular tasks (and understanding the underlying math), investment in field of data science and research (rather than just pursuing as result of price tag associated with AI/ML jobs), ability to translate business to ML tasks. Bottom skills would be experience in deep learning (PyTorch, Tensorflow), understanding of deep learning (neural networks, RNNs, etc.)

Must be able to write in -- python or R or SAS, but everything internally at CLIENT written in Python.

Need Local (Y/N): No but must come onsite when COVID resolved. Local preferred.

Interview Process: Will be given a particular ML task and a background around it, asked to see what they'd choose (algorithm), and how they'd solve the problem. If that goes well, follow on interview, and final with CIO (3 rounds).

About Project/ Team:

• This is part of the advanced analytics and data platform team. There are 4-5 data scientists and data analysts focused on research and development as well as traditional analytics. The remainder of the team is on the IT side of the house.


• 50% of time doing research and we tend to focus on logistics problems, utilization problems. ETAs- predicting when something should arrive, maintenance for Railcars, etc. Traditional data science problems associated with logistics and assets. That's about 50%.


• 20% probably project work- working with PMs. Collaborating, trying to implement into products we work on. Second part is delivering. Documentation, communication.


• Some of time is spent to understand customer needs; the problems they are handling are not always 'handed' to data scientists. We need good communication skills, ability to lead, identify problems, etc.


• Remainder I would say fits into data requests or analytics requests.( Last 10%) . Look at this problem in data and tell me what's going on, etc.


• Some existing models in place, most everything is Python based. There are some things built in PyTorch but a lot of that can be reproduced in Tensorflow. From a more traditional standpoint, standard ML libraries, SK Learn, SciPy.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for modeling complex business problems, discovering business insights and identifying opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques. In addition to data analytics skills, this role is also proficient at integrating and preparing large, varied datasets, , and communicating results and recommendations based on the model/analysis.

Essential Functions:

• 50%: Conduct analytical research and develop prototypes. Including but not limited to:


• Fleet Utilization for Railroads and Equipment Owners


• Miles & time between car repair incidents


• Railroad yard traffic predictions


• Predictive modeling of maintenance, ETAs, etc.


• Internal measurement development


• Prototype reports to be included in production systems


• 20%: Deliver analytical projects by:


• Working with project managers to define schedule and deliver results to all customers and internal stakeholders and managing expectations


• Collaborating with IT to deploy prototypes appropriately


• Creating and documenting repeatable solutions for meeting ongoing customer needs


• Communicating the results and methodology to internal and external stakeholders


• 20%: Gather, interpret, and translate customer needs into business problems that can be solved with analysis requirements by:


• Working with business stakeholders and/or facilitate data analysis opportunity discussions


• Leading solution analysis, definition, and requirements gathering for data services


• Prioritizing data analysis using rail industry priorities & business cases


• 10%: Provide analytical expertise to short-term and ad hoc requests and contribute to collaborative data analyses


• Ad hoc requests from AAR, internal and external senior management, committee chairs, etc.


• Collaborate with other data scientists to drive data analysis methodology, repeatable and structured


• Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions


• Takes the lead on analytical projects, and may lead the projects of other analytical consultants


• Work with manager to finalize priority and deadlines, and adjust & communicate as necessary


• Support and improve internal decision making


• Develop measurement dashboards


• Conduct and report industry trend and market analysis to meet industry needs


• Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Superior analytical skills with working knowledge of basic statistical, predictive and optimization models


• Strong knowledge of SAS or other statistical tool language (Python, R, etc.)


• Superior problem solving skills


• Superior data preparation skills; be able to access, transform and manipulate CLIENT and external customer data in its base form


• Strong knowledge of data visualization tools to present models and results to internal and external stakeholds


• Strong verbal and written communication skills


• Knowledge of machine learning models a plus


• Knowledge of big data engineering toolsets a plus


• Ability to work effectively with clients, IT management, business management, project managers, and IT staff


• Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized and flexible


• Ability to work independently and jointly in unstructured environments in a self-directed way


• Ability to take a leadership role on engagements and with customers


• Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively with multiple internal customers

Education & Experience:

• Bachelors degree in quantitative field (data science, mathematics, statistics, operations research, engineering) required or in lieu of a degree a minimum of 11-14 years of relevant experience


• Advanced degree in quantitative field preferred


• A minimum of 10 years related work experience


• Strong statistical analysis and methodology experience

Physical Requirements:

• Sedentary work: assignment involves sitting at workstation (desk) most of the time (up to 8 hours) with only occasional walking and/or standing


• Keyboarding: Primarily using fingers for typing


• Talking: Expressing or communicating verbally through use of spoken words (accurately conveying detailed or important spoken instructions to others)


• Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.


• Visual: Through close visual acuity, required to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading (with or without correction)


• Environment: work is performed within an office setting and therefore no substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions (i.e. extreme heat, cold, noise, etc.). Customer visits may be done at railroad facilities, which would require appropriate safety equipment.


• Travel: Some travel may be required (up to 25%).
