Overview:

The Outpatient Diagnostic Center Multi Proficient Technicians are responsible for collection of blood specimens, drug screens, EKGs, order entry, point of care collections and the duties of the sign in desk. The lab specimens, correct order entry and EKGs are required for the Outpatient Diagnostic center to perform important medical tests required by physicians to diagnose and treat illnesses. The accuracy and dependability of these tests are strictly dependent on the quality of the tests. Personnel are required to act as an effective representative of Mercy Outpatient Diagnostic Center. The multi Proficient technician works under direct supervision of the Outpatient Diagnostic Center Manager. Some job functions could include admissions editing, order entry (requiring computer literacy), electro-cardiography, phlebotomy, certain laboratory procedures, sign in desk duties certain basic nursing skills, point of service collections to include daily deposits and other duties as specified. Works under minimum supervision. Handles confidential information regarding patient medical records. Frequently handles biological specimens for which the potential of exposure from needle stick is one of the highest of hospital job categories. Performs work on patients from newborns to geriatrics. The employee will perform all work in accordance to the mission, vision and values of Mercy . Qualifications:

Education: A high school degree, good verbal and written communication skills required as well as computer literacy . Required meticulous work requiring an ability to concentrate, learn quickly and adapt to frequent procedural changes. Worker must be adept at performing a wide variety of tasks which includes performing phlebotomy tasks under stringent conditions allowing for no patient identification errors. Familiarity to many technical details is needed regarding specific collection and handling of enormous variety of specimen requirements as well as order entry. At times may be required to work alone and unsupervised. On the job phlebotomy training a consideration for exceptional applicants without previous experience. Requires a pleasant and outgoing personality due to the constant exposure to the public, hospital staff and medical staff. A professional and pleasant telephone manner is essential
Certifications: Must obtain American Heart Association BLS within a reasonable time-frame (generally within 6 months), based on skills, knowledge and experience.
Other: Train and be certified in accordance with Mercy policies and procedures. Organize and prioritize workload to complete assignments during shift with particular emphasis on response to STATS, ASAPs, timed draws, etc and arranges for timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory. Demonstrate skills in trouble shooting problems with physician orders to ensure the orders are complete for compliance but also to review closely so tests are not missed and samples do not have to be redrawn. May perform phlebotomy, drug testing, EKGS, admissions, point of service collection, sign in desk and order entry. Maintains inventory to insure that an adequate supply of materials are on hand. Maintain rigid accuracy in identification of all patients utilizing patient name and date of birth for verification before tests are done. Demonstrate competence in performing procedures for which he/she has been trained. Develop skills to perform difficult draws with minimum pain to the patient and with preservation of patient veins. Obtain and maintain integrity of specimens in accordance with training and physician orders. Notify manager/director in a timely manner of all problems with Phlebotomy duties. Safely perform invasive procedures so as to protect patient and self and self from bio-hazard exposure.
Preferred Experience: 6 months recent experience preferred.
Preferred Certifications: Phlebotomy certification preferred
