Job Description

The Sr. Mechanical Development Engineer role will be based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible to lead the mechanical design activity implementing innovative and cost-effective product solutions in order to support the organization from prototype development through full-scale production. The Mechanical Engineer will primarily support technology enablement programs to discover and grow new technologies.  These programs are hands on and operate with small cross-functional teams to quickly evaluate technologies and determine their immediate viability and strategic positioning for Flex.

Here is a glimpse of what you’ll do:


  • Work closely with clients and colleagues on initial concept development, including brainstorming, sketching, and complex CAD modeling

  • Support hands-on design and development of products/platforms to drive innovation for Flex and support customer engagements

  • Define new mechanical product architecture, manage design parameters and design tradeoff priorities on new/ambiguous technologies

  • Support the creation of product design documentation

  • Be a technical lead closing the gap between Strategy, Program Management, and Technical Teams

  • Collaborate with a team of cross-functional engineers and designers adopting time and cost-effective solutions and analyzing technical readiness level and manufacturing readiness level

  • Provide high quality technical reports supported by simulations and/or lab tests

  • Investigate new technologies and trends, assisting in generating production and technology roadmaps

  • Promoter and coordinator of design reviews and DFx reviews

  • Actively contribute to site goals and vision

  • Mentor junior engineers

Here is some of what you’ll need (required):


  • Bachelors and/or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar

  • Cumulative minimum 8 years mechanical design and development experience in a product and/or manufacturing environment

  • Experience executing the mechanical system, subsystem and part design of products from requirement specification up to transfer to manufacturing including fabrication, testing, verification and validation of engineering prototypes

  • Experienced with plastic and metal manufacturing processes and associated tolerances, material selection tradeoffs, assembly, automation, and metrology tools

  • Demonstrated ability to use SolidWorks to resolve mechanical challenges

  • Ability to quickly ramp up on, assess, and resolve diverse product challenges, and prioritize activity between multiple projects

  • Ability to work within a cross-functional team while maintaining self-sufficiency

  • Hands-on technical competency with prototyping manufacturing processes
