Job Description:

Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Associate Editor, Custom Media

Based – London or New York

Permanent role

Closing date – 27th February 2021

Associate Editor, Custom Media

We’re seeking a brilliant and savvy scientific and medical communicator to help support and develop our growing custom media business. Springer Nature is one of the largest and most prominent publishers of scientific and clinical research in the world. Titles include Nature, Scientific American, and Springer journals, among others.

The custom media group works with corporate and institutional partners to create high-quality print, digital, multimedia and live-event content for different audiences and titles. We’re editors, writers, videographers, designers, photographers, web developers and social media experts united by a fascination with great storytelling, scientific and clinical research, and the impact they can have.

The job of associate editor, custom media is to conceive, create, manage and deliver custom media articles and projects in the Americas and Europe. Though no research area is off limits, one important focus of the role is to support our medical communications business. If you are comfortable digesting clinical research, contextualizing trials results and navigating the various rules that govern the promotion of drugs and devices, this position could be for you.

Candidates considering this role should be prepared to work in a fun, dynamic and, at times, complex environment. As with any editorial role, candidates must, first and foremost, show proven excellence in assigning, editing and writing smart, comprehensible articles, in this case for scientific and clinical audiences. Unlike most editorial roles, this position also requires comfort working in a client-facing role, knowledge of multiple storytelling formats (video, event, webcast), and an ability to think visually with illustrations/animations. Because the position is inherently collaborative, candidates need a healthy dose of diplomacy to manage internal and external stakeholders.

The role of associate editor, custom media represents a rare opportunity to join a global team in a growing segment of Springer Nature. If you love science and medicine; if you’re a mastermind at telling stories across different formats; and if you want to build something commercially successful, join our global team now.

Key tasks:

  • Support the delivery of custom media projects in Nature, Scientific American and other Springer Nature publications, with the ultimate goal of driving sales and revenue.

  • Plan, resource, edit and produce high-quality custom media articles across our research areas, with a focus on clinical research and medical communications.

  • Develop and manage a roster of freelance science/medical writers to see projects through to client satisfaction.

  • Conceive of and identify visual support for custom media articles and projects.

  • Collaborate with sales colleagues to discuss client needs and propose new commercial editorial projects, including articulating editorial vision in the form of briefs.

  • Work with publishing/project managers to set and maintain workflows and deadlines for effective, efficient and budget-minded delivery of custom projects.

  • Collaborate with paying partners to develop content solutions that will fulfil their needs, outperform expectations and drive business renewal year after year.

  • Work with the audience insights team to review and assess analytics and use them as a guide for campaign management and editorial planning.

  • Contribute actively to global team discussions and idea-generation.

  • Consult legal team as necessary over sensitive stories.

Role requirements

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience working as an assigning editor in science and medical journalism and/or scientific and medical communications.

  • Sound scientific/medical background with at least a relevant bachelor’s degree. Advanced degrees are strongly preferred.

Skills/knowledge:

  • Strong editing skills, a high attention to detail and accuracy, and a good feel for narrative storytelling.

  • Comfort with, and ideally experience in, a commercial publishing setting, namely branded or sponsored content.

  • Proven understanding of scientific and clinical audiences and how to speak to them in a natural and compelling fashion.

  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with freelance writers, along with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Background in digital publishing, including editing for the web, social media, the use and understanding of analytics. Familiarity with the production of online video and other multimedia communications is ideal.

  • Familiarity with legal and journalistic ethical principles such as conflict of interest, along with an understanding of the regulatory requirements that govern the promotion of medicines and devices.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience working in a client-facing role

  • Strategic and business acumen, particularly in regard to developing a business

  • An enthusiasm for entrepreneurship

  • Background or understanding of drug development and pharmacology

How to apply:

Be sure to include a cover letter, resume and links to at least five editorial projects in which you played a substantial editorial role. Please describe that role clearly (e.g. – editor, editorial director, managing editor, senior editor, associate, etc.)

Once hired, the on-boarding and induction plan will take place remotely. All our teams are working remotely, so although the role is based from campus locations, the role holder will be expected to work on this basis until we return to offices.

Candidates will be considered on an ongoing basis. Early applications are encouraged.
