The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF), is currently looking to hire one part-time Hairdresser. In this role, you will work at the Albert J. Solnit Children's Center, located at 915 River Road Middletown, CT, which is conveniently located near all that downtown Middletown has to offer! In this part-time position you would work 20 hours per week, Sunday 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm with flexibility, Monday - Wednesday 3:30 pm - 8:30 pm.

This position is open to all hairstylists with a CT license. You'll have the chance to demonstrate your creativity in ways that draw out the potential in all our residents and enhance their esteem.The ideal candidate will:


  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed

  • Have current experience with Barbering and Hairdressing

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills

  • Have a proven knowledge of treatment and styling with all hair types

  • Display attention to detail ensuring tidiness of work stations and sterilization of tools

Essential functions include:


  • On a regular basis, requires the ability to walk

  • On a regular basis, requires the ability to reach with hands and arms

  • On a regular basis, requires the ability to stand for a minimum of 4 hours

  • On a frequent basis, requires the ability to stoop, kneel and crouch

The Albert J. Solnit Children's Center is widely recognized as a center of excellence for family-centered treatment of children and youth with serious emotional disturbances. This state-administered Psychiatric facility provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents under the age of eighteen, with severe mental illness and related behavioral and emotional problems who cannot be safely assessed or treated in a less restrictive setting. The South Campus consists of four co-ed hospital units and three female adolescent psychiatric residential treatment facility cottages.

Our 67-acre campus is centrally located in Middletown, Connecticut with a beautiful view overlooking the alluring Connecticut River. The Solnit Center facilities support our dedication to helping youth improve their individual and social competencies.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)



This class is accountable for independently performing a full range of hairdressing and cosmetic services for clients/patients.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES



Performs a variety of hairdressing duties including but not limited to the following: cutting hair; applying scalp treatments, coloring, permanent waving, finger waving and permanent cream relaxing; shampooing and blow drying hair; removing superfluous hair; applying make-up; sharpening, adjusting and sterilizing clippers, scissors and other equipment; may requisition and maintain stock of hairdressing supplies; cleans work area; performs related duties as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY



Knowledge of and ability to apply hairdressing and cosmetology principles and techniques; interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE



Possession of a current license as a Hairdresser issued by the Department of Public Health.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS




  • Experience providing hairdressing services for adolescents

  • Experience using modern hairdressing and barbering techniques

  • Experience working with clients who reside in a behavioral healthcare or institutional setting

  • Experience with diversified hair textures and styles

  • Experience adhering with CT DPH's Infection Prevention and Control Plan Guidelines for hairdressers, cosmetologists, and barbers

  • Experience with and using equipment needed to perform technical work



WORKING CONDITIONS



Incumbents may be exposed to communicable diseases and to risk of injury from clients/patients.
