Job Summary: Construct, assemble, maintain, and repair stationary steam boilers and boiler house auxiliaries. Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame tanks or vats, following blueprints. Work involves use of hand and power tools, plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles. Assist in testing assembled vessels. Direct cleaning of boilers and boiler furnaces. Inspect and repair boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators, automatic-control mechanisms, water columns, and auxiliary machines.


Job Tasks:



  • Attach rigging and signal crane or hoist operators to lift heavy frame and plate sections or other parts into place.

  • Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment.

  • Signal equipment operators to indicate proper equipment positioning.

  • Study blueprints to determine locations, relationships, or dimensions of parts.

  • Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements.

  • Repair or replace defective pressure vessel parts, such as safety valves or regulators, using torches, jacks, caulking hammers, power saws, threading dies, welding equipment, or metalworking machinery.

  • Maintain mechanical equipment.

  • Locate and mark reference points for columns or plates on boiler foundations, following blueprints and using straightedges, squares, transits, or measuring instruments.

  • Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly.

  • Mark reference points on construction materials.

  • Bolt or arc weld pressure vessel structures and parts together, using wrenches or welding equipment.

  • Weld metal components.

  • Position, align, and secure structural parts or related assemblies to boiler frames, tanks, or vats of pressure vessels, following blueprints.

  • Install metal structural components.

  • Position structural components.

  • Install manholes, handholes, taps, tubes, valves, gauges, or feedwater connections in drums of water tube boilers, using hand tools.

  • Install gauges or controls.

  • Bell, bead with power hammers, or weld pressure vessel tube ends to ensure leakproof joints.

  • Weld metal components.

  • Shape or fabricate parts, such as stacks, uptakes, or chutes, to adapt pressure vessels, heat exchangers, or piping to premises, using heavy-metalworking machines such as brakes, rolls, or drill presses.

  • Fabricate parts or components.

  • Assemble large vessels in an on-site fabrication shop prior to installation to ensure proper fit.

  • Assemble products or production equipment.

  • Lay out plate, sheet steel, or other heavy metal and locate and mark bending and cutting lines, using protractors, compasses, and drawing instruments or templates.

  • Mark reference points on construction materials.

  • Examine boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, or vats to locate defects, such as leaks, weak spots, or defective sections, so that they can be repaired.

  • Inspect industrial or commercial equipment to ensure proper operation.

  • Shape seams, joints, or irregular edges of pressure vessel sections or structural parts to attain specified fit of parts, using cutting torches, hammers, files, or metalworking machines.

  • Fabricate parts or components.

  • Inspect assembled vessels or individual components, such as tubes, fittings, valves, controls, or auxiliary mechanisms, to locate any defects.

  • Inspect industrial or commercial equipment to ensure proper operation.

  • Straighten or reshape bent pressure vessel plates or structure parts, using hammers, jacks, or torches.

  • Fabricate parts or components.

  • Install refractory bricks or other heat-resistant materials in fireboxes of pressure vessels.

  • Clean pressure vessel equipment, using scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning solvents.


Required Qualifications:



  • Pass an OIS Basic Rigging Assessment, or NCCER certified.

  • Current Basic Orientation Plus (Safety Council card) or within 3 months expiration.

  • Current TWIC Card

  • Have three (3) or more years' experience in your craft.

  • Demonstrated industrial construction/maintenance work history and experience.

  • Fully comprehend and accurately interpret blueprints, construction drawings, technical manuals, and manufacturers' manuals and instructions.

  • Possess applied knowledge on the pipe fitting processes for industrial piping and boilers.

  • Good problem-solving abilities and reading comprehension.

  • Ability to work with others and serve as a team player, while being able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Good communication skills (speaking and actively listening) with co-workers and supervisors.


Physical Requirements:



  • Significant and sustained periods of standing, walking, bending, squatting and lifting.

  • Must have good manual dexterity to perform precision adjustments of machinery parts and controls.

  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull: objects, materials, controls and tools.

  • May be required to lift, carry and move up to 50lbs.

  • Will work at heights, climb ladders and stairways and work off of platforms. Will work at heights up to 300' utilizing proper fall protection.

  • Will use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception and peripheral vision.

  • Must be capable of working outside in the elements including but not limited to the heat, cold, rain, snow and wind; and must be able to work for long period of times up to 12 hours a day.

  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.
