Associate Editor or Senior Editor, Nature Materials

Location: London, Berlin or New York

Nature Research is recruiting an editor for Nature Materials. The position is offered on a permanent basis.

Nature Materials is a prestigious international monthly journal covering all aspects of cutting-edge materials research.  We are seeking candidates with scientific background and research experience in condensed matter physics to cover the areas of optics and photonics, phononics, plasmonics and metamaterials. 

The ideal candidate should have a PhD (or equivalent) and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong research record.  In addition to a deep understanding of their own subject, they should be able to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of condensed matter physics. Previous editorial experience is not required, yet candidates with substantial editorial experience will be considered for Senior Editor. Proficiency in scientific writing and in developmental editing are desirable.

This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific expertise, the ability to absorb new knowledge, and a keen interest in the communication of science are prerequisites. We seek candidates who are resourceful, open-minded, decisive and diligent. The role involves constant learning, and offers flexibility in self-management and a sensible balance of independence and collaborative teamwork.

The successful applicant will work within a close-knit multidisciplinary team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, the overseeing of peer review, the generation and discussion of ideas for new content, the commissioning and editing of reviews, comments, and writing. Editors play an important role in determining the representation of their subjects in the journal and the position also requires attendance to international scientific conferences and regular liaising with researchers via conference calls and on-site visits.

The position will be based in our London, Berlin or New York offices.

The paper you highlight should not be from your own (or previous) research group, but should be on a topic that you find interesting (and might even wish to learn more about). The highlight should explain the significance and implications of the research to someone who is not a specialist in the subject.
