About Energy and Sustainability Services

Schools and institutions are struggling to find ways to reduce their vulnerability to failing infrastructure that impedes their ability to perform the mission of serving their constituents. Often, they lack the ability to even define the real underlying issues, and even more often lack access to funding to address them.

Using the resources of E&SS, Schneider Electric is positioned to work with these institutions to assess their facilities and define the issues, while identifying energy and operational cost savings to provide capital that funds much needed upgrades, and allow the institution to focus on their mission.

Specifically for water and wastewater treatment, E&SS is uniquely positioned to reduce the time to construction by months, or even years, through our unique contracting vehicles, in addition to identifying energy and operational cost savings. Often working with plants that have been neglected and underfunded for years, E&SS is helping to modernize processes and prevent catastrophic failures, while also bringing plants into regulatory compliance that has continued to change over the years regardless of the plant's ability to fund upgrades.

This group is dedicated to using our time and energy to accomplish our mission of improving facilities and water/wastewater treatment plants to allow our customers to better serve their citizens, and be better stewards of the environment at the same time.

Though this role will be operating with both our institutional projects and our water/wastewater projects, water/wastewater is a small and quickly growing sector for E&SS, and working with these projects will enable you to be part of the creation process as we work to establish the best practices, industry standards, and paths for personal skills and growth opportunities.

Responsibilities of the Project Engineer II Role

To help E&SS achieve the mission described above, the Project Engineer is responsible for performing project support tasks to maintain project communication and records. During initial project phases, these tasks will include coordinating with the Project Manager to develop submittal registers, project schedules, project file storage structures, and project management tools. These tasks are critical to the success of the project, from setting expectations to facilitating communication during implementation of the project. Too often these tasks are overlooked or underperformed due to time constraints for the Project Manager, and this role will supplement their efforts to perform these tasks with excellence.

During the operational phase of a project, the Project Engineer will perform tasks including receiving, recording, and routing submittals, project schedule updates, meeting records, and project file management.

All of these tasks will enable the Project Manager to focus on tasks such as coordinating site management, issue resolution, and managing the customer relationship.

Skills Critical to Success

Critical skills that will determine success in this role are as follows:
1. A strong desire to maintain project file organization in order to ensure version control, information accessibility, and clear communication with both internal and external stakeholders.

2. Understanding of the concept and purpose of submittals for both contract compliance and project success, learned through experience of project success through good communication, or failures thereof.

3. The ability to work with the Project Manager, who will serve as either as a direct contributor or in an advisory capacity, to evaluate the stakeholder register and scope documents to determine submittal routing and approval procedures.

4. Experience with project management software such as Procore, Unifier, Prolog, etc.

5. Moderate to advanced ability in Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel.

6. Moderate ability in Adobe Acrobat Pro, for the purposes of creating, editing, and commenting on PDF files.

7. Experience or ability to learn file management systems, particularly Box.com.

8. Experience with customer billing

9. The ability to follow process and best practices documents to accomplish the primary duties of this role.

10. This role will handle submittals ranging from general construction to HVAC to lighting and wastewater process. In depth technical knowledge of these areas is not required, but a cursory understanding or ability to understand the type of information being presented is critical, so that the employee can direct the information to the correct technical resource for review.

Career Progression

This is a unique position within our organization that offers several potential career paths. With exposure and experience in the performance contract and retrofit construction world, this position could move laterally to entry level project management, either in the construction or project development phases. With exhibited skill and desire to work across multiple roles internally and externally, this position could prepare the employee for advancement into a construction services manager role, where the employee would become responsible for subcontractor and vendor management during the development phase, and procurement during the construction phase, and could take on direct reports in the form of other project engineers.

We do not expect the Project Engineer to be an expert in any of these areas, or to provide technical review of these submittals. However, if the employee displays a natural curiosity about these technical items, the Project Engineer role will afford the opportunity to grow general or specific technical knowledge.

A key focus for career progression in this role will be the desire to interact and learn from experience of those adjacent to this role. Further, a desire and demonstrated ability to refine or create process documents by identifying and capturing best practices will prepare the employee for a management role. Additionally, achieving a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, and understanding the impact of a well crafted project charter and mission statement will position the employee for such a leadership role in the region.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Project Engineer role will require some work on site, both to perform the duties for this role and to provide opportunity for learning and career progression. Often these site visits will be for team meetings, customer meetings, and subcontractor site evaluations.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary duties of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary duties.

Moving over rough or uneven surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy to light items. Transporting of items such as a laptop computer and luggage; driving an automobile, etc.

We know skills and competencies show up in many different ways and can be based on your life experience. If you do no t necessarily meet all the requirements that are listed, we still encourage you to apply for the position .
