Zeus is a fast-growing component of the Washington Post that is helping publishers optimize their digital advertising and level the playing field as they compete for ad dollars with digital native social and search giants, using the same technology and strategy as the Washington Post.

The Director of Engineering will lead our Machine Learning team that dual supports our Zeus platform and the systems that power The Washington Post website. This role leads the development of existing and new revenue producing products to support our world-class journalism and partners. Experience building commercial SaaS products while leading multiple engineering teams is essential. The ideal candidate has a strong technical background and significant experience partnering with product, sales, and marketing to delight customers.

Responsibilities

• Effectively manage a team of engineering leads and individual contributors across multiple functional areas, including data science, software engineering and data architecture.


• Direct the building of production systems that personalize our reader's and partner's experiences on The Washington Post and across the Zeus Network


• Drive optimization, testing, and tooling to improve quality


• Set strategy for data analysis to establish baselines and inform product decisions


• Collaborate with a cross functional agile team spanning design, data science, product management, and engineering to build new technologies and features

• Own the capacity planning, recruiting and financial planning processes

Required Skills

• 10 years of technical experience in software engineering and system architecture


• 5 years of experience managing 10 or more software engineers


• 3 years of experience leading the development of commercial SaaS software products


• Experience leading fast-paced agile software engineering projects


• Strong written and verbal communication skills


• Deep understanding and strong background in Machine Learning

Preferred Skills

• Experience managing engineering managers.


• Hands on experience with AWS, Java, JavaScript and Machine Learning algorithms and frameworks.


• Experience with AdTech.


• PhD in CS
