Strategy Associate - HPB at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in Detroit, Michigan

Job Description:

The Strategy Associate-Health Plan Business will be part of the division’s Strategy team responsible for shaping and driving strategies for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s (BCBSM) Health Plan Business (HPB) division.



  • Work as a strategic adviser and partner with market-facing segments and functional areas on near- and long-term divisional priorities and strategies, such as cross-divisional initiatives, enterprise-wide efforts, segment and functional area specific efforts.


  • Gather and synthesize external perspectives (e.g., market dynamics, competitor insights, etc.) to perform quantitative analysis (e.g., market sizing, financial modeling, etc.) and frame strategic options given market constraints.


  • Develop cross-functional work plans and deliverables to a diverse set of executive audiences.


  • Facilitate executive-level strategy sessions to generate valuable insight to explore long-term options.


  • Support the division’s strategic and capital planning processes and its key strategic forums/ discussions, gaining exposure to the most important priorities of the business. 


  • Develop detailed project plans and schedules, identify goals, objectives, risks and resource allocation. Monitor project status for significant deviations in quality, cost or schedule.  


  • Perform other related duties as required.


" Qualifications"



  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required (e.g., Business, Economics, Finance, Actuarial Science, Healthcare Administration).


  • Three (3) years experience managing projects in health insurance or closely related field.


  • Consulting or professional service experience is preferred (e.g., management consulting, investment banking, finance, or corporate strategy experience). 


  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skill required including financial modeling and quantitative assessment skills.


  • Capable of structuring business problems, possessing knowledge of diverse strategic frameworks and capable of applying frameworks to regular business problems and solutions. 


  • Must have comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty and possess the ability to manage multiple competing or vague priorities. 


  • Strong written and oral communication skills with confidence and ability to interact effectively with senior leaders.


  • Analytical experience with financial models, data, and operations.


  • Ability to work well with others as well as independently within a team environment. 


  • Strong Microsoft PowerPoint skills; proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, and other industry standard PC applications and systems.


  • Interface with various departments, senior management and external individuals providing value and support for continuous improvement.
