Job Description:


The Editorial Manager’s primary responsibility is to holistically and strategically address Learning Development’s quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) needs, as well as provide editorial support and writing subject matter expertise to the rest of the company.  

 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 
Editorial Team Management:

•    Manage a diverse and dynamic team of editors and editorial assistants, including their workloads, employee development, performance objectives, and other personnel management tasks

•    Manage editorial requests and assignments to support both goals and workload of the editorial team and needs and priorities of LD and the entire company 

•    Establish and maintain a communication process for editorial assignments 

•    Assign and manage small update projects, including documenting deliverables, milestones, and deadlines, and ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, cost, and quality 

•    Maintain intake process for editing/writing/QA projects external to LD and assign appropriate resources for given requests from stakeholders

•    Actively support editorial team members’ professional development planning and activities

•    Conduct editorial workshops with team to support knowledge transfer and professional development 

Quality Assurance and Quality Control:

•    Define and implement consistent processes for QC throughout the design and development processes 

•    Establish and maintain tone and expectations for QA and QC approaches: how the editorial team internally works together and collaborates with all stakeholders (instructional designers, project managers, product managers, etc.) 

•    Develop and maintain relationships with companywide stakeholders to understand quality priorities and inform strategic direction of QA and QC processes, practices, and decisions 

Leadership:

•    Lead and manage various QA/QC initiatives that impact LD and the entire company 

•    Collaborate with fellow leaders to solve issues and provide thought leadership

Editorial Processes and Duties:

•    Establish, maintain, and update editorial processes across LD and for other projects external to LD as needed 

•    Lead effort to document and support development of consistent LD team standards, style, and processes, including guidelines for Section 508 compliance 

•    Serve as a backup editor on course editing projects, and as a primary editorial resource for high-profile companywide projects 

 
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

•    Industry quality assurance and quality control best practices and guidelines 

•    Business implications of quality control 

•    Diverse writing styles and style guides

•    Chicago Manual of Style

•    Learning development process and needs of key project stakeholders

Proven ability to:

•    Adapt writing and editorial style to meet stakeholder and client project requirements

•    Think strategically and tactically, apply business acumen, and balance team needs vs. department and company needs

•    Adapt to a rapidly-changing environment in response to stakeholder needs and department and company priorities 

•    Exercise a strong voice to push back on status quo and make difficult decisions without micromanagement from top

•    See systematic and big-picture implications of standards, processes, and practices 

•    Communicate effectively with large, diverse groups of professionals, both onsite and remote 

•    Flex communication style to multiple cultural and professional backgrounds

•    Engage and involve team members in support of strategic initiatives 

•    Manage and work on multiple projects simultaneously 

•    Manage expectations of multiple stakeholders 

•    Find creative, innovative solutions to complex challenges

•    Lead people to successfully achieve objectives

•    Lead and advocate for new initiatives and strategies

•    Lead and communicate effectively with remote teams

•    High level of emotional intelligence and demonstrated ability to advocate for team members' professional development and individual strengths

•    Comfort working in an environment where ideas are shared and challenged 

Other skills:

•    Proven effective communication skills—written and verbal (formal and informal) 

•    Strong internal and external customer orientation  

•    Strong time management skills for both self and editorial team members

•    Quality focus and attention to detail 

•    Computer fluency, including Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Teams

 
PREFFERED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE  

•    Management experience: 1–3 years preferred 

•    Project management experience: 2 years preferred  

•    Experience collaborating with remote teammates

•    Familiarity with learning content management systems; Xyleme LCMS a plus 

•    Knowledge of Section 508 compliance a plus

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

•    Bachelor’s degree with specialization in English, writing, communications, instructional design, or related field; master’s degree preferred

•    Minimum of 5 years of experience in writing, communications, or learning development 

•    Minimum of 2–4 years of editorial experience
