Job Description:

Summary

The Safety & Emergency Services Officer is responsible for performing routine safety and Emergency Services duties, supporting site teams in implementation of safety objectives, and emergency response operations.  Areas of responsibility include safety, industrial hygiene, fire protection, security, emergency medical treatment, technical rescue, and Hazardous Material Incident response.  S&ES Officers are responsible for performing preventative maintenance on fire/security alarm systems, Fire Water systems, and other associated equipment.

Essential Functions


  • Implementing procedures during hazardous materials incidents, fires and other emergencies in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.

  • Conducting atmospheric sampling using available gas detection equipment, hot work, confined space entry, emergency downwind air monitoring, etc.

  • Providing emergency medical care for injured or ill personnel under the Basic Life Support Non-Transport (BLS) license provided by the State of Michigan.

  • Providing Security means to the site, which meet and/or exceed the established procedures.

  • Performing routine inspections, testing and maintenance of site fire and safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, life safety system, security systems, 5-minute escape packs, SCBA's, etc.

  • Conducting routine walk throughs ("rounds") of site to identify fire hazards, housekeeping concerns, unsafe conditions, and other deficiencies.

  • Coordinating confined space entries, pre plan rescue operations and perform rescue operations.

Additional Duties


  • Developing and/or conducting training as needed.

  • Performing S&ES dispatching operations, such as operating console phone, using PA system, activating pager system, acknowledging and dispatching alarms, controlling site access, use of radio system, community warning systems, CCTV system, etc.

  • Writing departmental procedures.

Job is accountable for performing all assigned duties in an effective and professional manner, and must be able to work effectively in a team environment. Must have a working knowledge of:


  • All site safety and security policies, procedures and standards.

  • Key MIOSHA regulations.

  • All departmental procedures.

  • Site emergency plan and procedures

  • HSC site including location of fire and safety equipment. With progressive levels, job is increasingly accountable for broader skills and knowledge, areas of specials expertise, coordination of special projects, independent problem solving, enhanced communication skills, and various administrative duties.

Minimum Requirements

Required:


  • Valid Emergency Medical Responder Certification (formally Medical First Responder) or higher license level

  • State of Michigan Firefighter Certification

Preferred Education/Certifications:

Fire Fighting Training/Experience


  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science

  • NFPA 600 Level Advanced Exterior/Interior Certification

Security or Law Enforcement Training/Experience


  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice (or)

  • Minimum of 2 years of industrial security or law enforcement work experience (or)

  • M.C.O.L.E.S. Certification

Hazardous Materials Training/Experience


  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Hazardous Materials (or)

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science (or)

  • Previous certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician
