GPS Manufacturer/Distributor

Garmin’s Consumer Industrial Design team is looking for an additional CMF designer to join us in Kansas City. You’ll be part of a talented and passionate team of designers developing products for Garmin’s Automotive, Outdoor, Fitness, and Marine markets -- products like cycling computers, outdoor handhelds, dash cameras, and much more. As well as a growing range of wearables for wellness, running, outdoor, golf, kids, and scuba diving.

Work directly with industrial design, engineering, marketing and leadership to create compelling color, material, and finish solutions for consumer products sold worldwide. Join our growing team with over 40 Industrial Designers in a 35,000 square foot design studio and prototype shop with extensive design and prototyping equipment. We’re looking for a CMF designer with the courage to explore long-term trends and new ideas in colors, materials, and finishes, combined with the ability to collaborate respectfully in a team.

A Garmin CMF Designer leads and supports the selection of colors and materials for consumer products collaborating with Industrial Design, Engineering, Marketing, and Leadership teams to explore, innovate, and execute world-class designs.  You will utilize your knowledge of category-specific consumer trends to improve product appearance.

Essential Functions:


  • Develop CMF strategies, color and materials development, and push through to production implementation with the design team across all Garmin products.

  • Apply color palette and CMF strategies into CMF programs through renderings and trays for Garmin’s consumer products across business segments. 

  • Forecast global macro trend themes and resulting color, material, finish, and texture innovations for our business segments.

  • Curate compelling global segment trend forecasts from cross-industry trend research and CMF strategies for distribution to cross-functional teams. 

  • Provide thought leadership for material development for a broad range of materials and push those developments into production.

  • Understanding, articulating, and developing against a color strategy, synthesizing elements from the global, cross-industry trends, curated to category-specific implementation toward niche business segments. 

  • Maintain color and material library 

  • Strong color acuity and application across different substrates

  • Communicate concepts and ideas through verbal, visual, and written means

  • Work with a team of prototype specialists to create color and material targets

  • Collaborate and strategize with Industrial Design, Engineering, Marketing and Leadership teams to translate project goals into CMF design solutions

  • Collaborate with the global CMF design and engineering team in Taiwan and Kansas City for CMF production and opportunities for materials innovation

     

Education, experience, & skills required:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or another field relevant to the essential functions of this job description from a four-year college or university OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge

  • Must demonstrate knowledge, education, experience and/or training necessary to use tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, and Keyshot

  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing methods including, but not limited to: plastic, silicone, metals, coatings, and more.

  • Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrates proficient presentation skills

  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude, and work respectfully with others

  • Demonstrated ability to autonomously generate and support pragmatic solutions that meet project timelines and high-quality standards
