We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Botanical Field Technician to assist with vegetation and soils monitoring throughout the Ely District of Nevada Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. The position is based in Ely, Nevada. Travel to and from Ely, Nevada is not included.

This position requires extensive travel in remote areas during the field season, with up to eight days/seven nights of overnight camping per field hitch anticipated. Field hitches are eight 10-hour days, Tuesday to Tuesday, with six days off between hitches or four 10-hour days Monday to Thursday with three days off. The hitch schedule will be modified around federal holidays. Day trips from Ely may occur during some hitches.

Salary will range from between $16-$18 per hour, depending on experience, plus $50/day non-taxable camping per diem. Paid holidays and opportunity for health insurance. This is an excellent opportunity to work outdoors and learn new skills in a beautiful location .

Responsibilities:


  • The primary responsibilities will be to conduct vegetation and soils monitoring for BLM AIM. Monitoring will follow established BLM protocols and training will be provided.
  • This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and work with a variety of BLM natural resource employees.
  • The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and demonstrated plant taxonomic skills with flora of the sagebrush, shrubland, grassland, and pinyon-juniper ecosystems of the Great Basin and Mohave desert. Experience conducting field work, including monitoring with preference given to those with Terrestrial AIM training and experience, hiking in remote areas, and camping, is preferred.
  • Following fieldwork completion by end of September, office tasks will include data entry and management, plant identification, and assisting with report preparation through November 5.

Location : Ely is a small town located in eastern Nevada with services including groceries and restaurants. Outdoor recreation in the area is plentiful. Mountain biking and hiking trails start right outside town and Great Basin National Park is an hour away. The nearest major metropolitan areas are Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, which are both about three and half hours from Ely.

Requirements:


  • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in botany and conducting field work is important. Must have a minimum of 12 semester hours or technical courses in the area of plant identification, botany, rangeland plants, agriculture, or crop science.
  • Staff performing monitoring must be able to identify and key out sagebrush-steppe plant species (and habitats) found in the Great Basin and Mohave desert, specifically Nevada.
  • Applicant must also have knowledge of rangeland ecosystems and soils.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field are critical.
  • Applicants must be willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions, and often miles from the vehicle. Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off trail hikes, steep slopes, extreme hot and cold conditions, and biological hazards (animals and plants).
  • The successful applicant will be safety conscience, and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license, safe driving record, and CPR/First Aid training.
  • Preferred experience driving a four-wheel drive pickup truck on rough terrain, ability to operate UTV, trailer equipment and backup trailers for loading and unloading.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in botany, ecology, or related field, or working toward this type of degree with a minimum of 12 semester hours as indicated above.
  • Knowledge and/or experience identifying plants in the field and using dichotomous keys.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with botanical surveys and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other BLM AIM core methods.
  • Experience with electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets, and Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123).
  • Experience navigating with topographic map and GPS.
  • Ability to use standard office software (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoy working outdoors.
  • First Aid/CPR certification. Wilderness First Aid a plus.
  • Experience with off-road driving, UTV, and trailers.
