The Lab Technician position requires performance of both simple and complex microbiological test procedures, as well as, operation and maintenance of all instrumentation used in or to support the testing process.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Performance of the following microbiological laboratory tests and procedures:


  • Bioburden, sterility, bacteriostasis/fungistasis, bacterial endotoxin testing, heterotrophic plate counts, microbial identification studies, decontamination and disinfection procedures, media preparation, sterilization and quality control, durability testing, and cleaning/sanitizing Microbiological Services cleanrooms.

  • Operation and maintenance of steam sterilizers, glassware washers, ultrasonic consoles, microtiter plate readers and microbial identification systems.

  • Data entry and peer review of test results.

  • Procedure maintenance

Expected Areas of Competence


  • Familiarity with running, stocking, and maintaining a working laboratory preferred

  • Must be familiar with aseptic technique. Experience working in a cleanroom environment is preferred.

  • Must be able to plan and organize own work activities to complete job assignments within allotted time and under constant pressure of deadlines.

  • Must have the ability to accurately perform algebraic calculations, particularly those involving dilution and use of scientific notation.

  • Must be detail oriented, analytical and possess the ability to determine reasonability of test results.

  • Must be computer literate with significant experience operating Windows based environments. Previous experience working with relational databases preferred.

  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Must be able to work as a team member.

  • Must be able to work overtime and/or shift work as the job demands.

Education/Experience Requirements


  • A minimum of a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required

  • A minimum of 1 year of previous experience as a lab technician is required 

Travel Requirements


  • Up to 10%
