The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Facilities Mechanical Engineer – Chilled Water/Compressed Air System Specialist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:


  • Provide design of chilled water and compressed air generation and distribution systems


  • Create specifications for purchasing chilled water and compressed air system equipment


  • Recommend equipment selections based on 20-year life cycle cost evaluations


  • Model energy consumption in chilled water and compressed air systems


  • Provide design of cooling tower water systems for utility and process systems


  • Scope PLC and DDC control systems for chilled water and compressed air systems


  • Oversee design work by consultants


  • Support Facilities Team Leaders as they develop and manage project timelines and budgets


  • Successfully interact with multiple discipline teams including 3M plant personnel, consultants, suppliers, and vendors


  • Communicate effectively to project team, facility staff and project owners


  • Troubleshoot chilled water and compressed air issues in new and existing systems


  • Insure application of applicable codes, standards, and internal guidelines


  • Stay abreast of technology advancements in chilled water and compressed air generating and distribution systems


Your Skills and Expertise 
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical (or similar) Engineering field (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited university


  • Seven (7) years of experience with chilled water and compressed air systems in a private, public, government or military environment  


Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • Possess a Professional Engineering License


  • Have 10 years of experience in design of chilled water and compressed air systems


  • Have 5 years of experience commissioning mechanical utility systems


  • Have 2 years of experience scoping PLC and DDC control systems


  • Understand time value of money economics used in 20-year life cycle cost analyses and budget estimate generation


  • Be proficient in use of project management skills for developing timelines, budgets, and coordination of activities


  • Be proficient creating Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Word documents


  • Be proficient at using electronic tools for design, documentation, and communication


  • Function as a team player with the ability to contribute in a matrix environment


Travel: May include up to 25% Domestic travel

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized.
