Job Description:

The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a Senior Broadcast Engineer to be based at our production studios in Chicago, IL.   This person is responsible for installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of broadcast/IT systems hardware, software, operating systems, and related infrastructure associated with a live TV broadcast channel.  

Key activities


  • Partner with the news/production departments to develop, build and support video, audio, and other equipment associated with television broadcasting. This includes but not limited to server-based record and play-out systems, production and routing switchers , encoders/decoders,  news room computer systems, master control automation systems and data/transmission flow.

  • Regularly attends weekly meetings and confers with director/producers, news management,  other system engineers, and users about current and prospective systems changes and future needs.

  • Provides all levels of technical support to internal and external customers, as necessary.

  • Participates in, or independently perform, scheduled after-hours/weekend system deployment and maintenance activities

  • Research, documents, and implements project/program requirements and specifications

  • Develops and documents all processes and standards and work with other team members to cross train and provide back up and support for technologies within the enterprise

  • Maintains a positive working relationship with IT technical staff, customers, and managed services providers

Education & Experience


  • Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Technical field or equivalent experience

  • 7+ years minimum experience in broadcast operations with proven ability to configure and  troubleshoot broadcast production systems

  • Knowledge of analog and digital audio and video wiring, signal flow and routing.

  • Knowledge of SAN, NAS and Object storage

  • Scripting and automation skills relative to infrastructure technologies desired

  • Experience with production and post workflows including custom MAM workflows

  • Experience in a production oriented, highly available, hosting operations environment desired

  • Demonstrated experience successfully working in Cross Functional project teams

  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential

Skills & Abilities


  • Operational knowledge of studio, news and control room technology.

  • Knowledge of newsroom systems such as iNews is a plus

  • Understanding of streaming and OTT technologies, protocols, and practices

  • Linux, Windows and Mac system administrator skills

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a high level of customer service

  • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

Work Environment:


  • Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines

  • Sitting for extended periods of time

  • Ability to lift and install rack-mounted servers

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects

  • Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings

  • Some travel may be required for the purpose of off-site software installation and system startups
