Department Description: Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID Needham) is a licensed 58-bed acute care hospital offering the same care as our direct affiliate Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in your community.
This close affiliation with BIDMC, since 2000, has facilitated the clinical integration of staff and resources in emergency medicine, hospital medicine (hospitalists), cardiology, radiology, orthopaedics, general surgery, pathology and oncology. Physicians in Needham maintain very close relationships with the staff at BIDMC; so in cases where patients need to be transferred from Needham to Boston for more advanced care, there are systems in place to make that transition happen quickly.

Job Summary: Reporting to the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Chair of Surgery for clinical issues, the APP serves as a key clinical provider and team member in the treatment and management of Intensive Care Unit patients and patients in the operative, emergency department and medical-surgical floors. They practice under the direction of the Medical Director of the ICU and other Intensivists in a manner consistent with both the Massachusetts Board and hospital policy. The APP will also work collaboratively with surgeons and/or Hospitalists on the medical-surgical floor by assisting the physicians with the ongoing management of patients under the care of the surgical attendings. The APP is responsible for the assessment, admission, stabilization, and ongoing management of patients in the ICU under the direction of the Intensivist.

Essential Responsibilities:


  1. In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination. Ensures that all requisite testing is completed.

  2. Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Reviews patient care management issues with the Intensivist or Attending Surgeon. Consults with appropriate resources as needed.

  3. Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation.

  4. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to: wound care/debridement,
    tube/drain insertion, care and removal, suturing/suture removal, insertion or removal of traction pins, splint, brace or cast application or removal, insertion or removal of central venous lines, insertion of nasogastric tubes,

  5. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to: insertion of arterial lines, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy and IV insertion, electrocardiograms.

  6. Serves as first or second assistant in the operating room.

  7. Prepares and drapes patient; closes skin incisions performs related procedures as directed by attending surgeon.

  8. Provide postoperative care and management of patients in Inpatient Unit.

  9. Enters orders for the initial ICU admission and subsequent ICU care. Is responsible for making daily rounds on patients alone and/or with intensivist or surgical team; report findings to attending physician. Places orders in the EMR.

  10. Is responsible for transcribing preoperative and postoperative orders including medications controlled and non-controlled), fluid orders, diets, activity levels, laboratory tests, x-rays, special procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in any field of study and completion of either a 2-year PA or surgical NP program required.

  2. License Nurse Practitioner License required., or Registration Physician Assistant License required., and Certificate 1 Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.

  3. 0-1 years related work experience required in Minimum of one year of postgraduate experience as a surgical nurse practitioner or physician assistant..

  4. Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for patients in both elective and emergent situations.

  5. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  1. Previous experience in ICU setting.

  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
