The Delivery, Device and Connected Solutions (DDCS) organization within Eli Lilly and Company supports the design, development, and commercialization of drug products and pharmaceutical delivery systems including medical devices and container closure systems. The Materials Engineering team of DDCS provides value to the organization by providing materials selection and engineering support to Lilly’s existing and novel delivery device and packaging portfolio from advanced development through commercialization.

Responsibilities:


  • Lead materials engineering and materials selection for drug product packaging and devices from advanced development through commercialization.


  • Lead and perform failure analysis investigations on components, sub-assemblies and/or complete devices and recommend changes related to materials, design and/or manufacturing processes.


  • Integrate computer aided engineering (CAE) and MoldFlow modeling results with mechanical properties of polymers to guide materials selection process with part design and manufacturing processes.


  • Provide molding recommendations and support process control strategy development for materials usage in manufacturing processes (extrusion, molding, etc.); ensure thorough documentation of engineering studies and technical reports.


  • Participate in formal design reviews, risk assessment, and root cause analysis using common FMEA or Fault Tree analysis.


  • Execute a wide variety of experimental plans with internal and external resources.


  • Maintain network of key resin and material testing external suppliers including following Lilly Confidentiality guidelines.


  • Enhance Lilly’s competitive advantage through development of proprietary knowledge or by procurement of patents.


  • May represent department or company in interactions with internal and external committees or regulators, presentations, publications or other professional activities.


Basic Requirements:


  • BS/MS in Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or closely related field with 10+ years of relevant industry experience in medical devices or other highly regulated industries

  • OR

  • PhD Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or closely related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience in medical devices or other highly regulated industries

Additional Skills/Preferences:


  • Expertise in materials selection (plastics, adhesives, coatings), polymer processing (injection molding, extrusion) and joining (welding).


  • Expertise in polymer analysis (thermal methods, chemical methods, mechanical methods, rheological methods, surface analysis) and structure-processing-property relationships.


  • Expertise in leading material failure investigations to identify root cause and ability to correlate failure data to material, design or manufacturing process.


  • Experience in product development and demonstrated delivery of new product and product platforms.


  • Experience in generating data required for CAE and Moldflow studies.


  • Experience in using post treatment processes such as coatings to enhance the performance of the materials and/or components preferred.


  • Demonstrated scientific, engineering, and applied cGMP skills preferred.


  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary environment.


  • Problem solving and decision making skills.


  • Strong oral and written communication skills.


Additional Information:

Travel is part of the job, usually 10-20% but up to ~30% at times so must be able to travel within US and OUS.
