Position Overview

This position will provide comprehensive engineering support to Proterra’s Electrical/Controls Development Manager and other site leadership team members. This position will develop multiple electromechanical systems on the vehicle with respect to control design, development, and validation.  This includes helping with hardware specification, requirement definitions, failure mode analysis, coding, and validation.  Time will be spent working in cross functional teams to help develop automated test systems for control algorithms in a SIL and HIL environment.  You will be responsible for developing multiple electromechanical systems on the vehicle with respect to control design, development and validation.  This includes helping with hardware specifications, requirement definitions, failure analysis, coding and validation.  This position will spend time working in cross functional teams to help develop automated test systems for control algorithms in a SIL and HIL environment.

About the Role – You will:

• Design, specify and program control systems for various vehicle low voltage and networked systems.


• Develop and execute system specifications, DFMEAs, and validation plans.


• Work in cross functional team throughout the design process to ensure optimal solutions for design, integration and control of systems.


• Implement industry best practices for software design, validation and safety analysis


• Track work using feature and bug tracking system.


• Utilize source control to track revisions of software.


• Work with product validation group to ensure product is validated to meet system requirements.


• Integrate high voltage AC and DC power distribution, interconnect, safety and functional elements into vehicles.


• Support field incidents resolution for issues related to vehicle and charging station.


• Maintain State-of-the-Art knowledge of related topics


• Other duties as assigned by management.

• You will report to the Electrical/Controls Development Manager and collaborate with other Design team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and other manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, CA.

Your Experience Includes:

• Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience


• 3-5 years of engineering experience with the transportation or heavy vehicle industry


• Working knowledge of classical and modern control theory


• Experience developing control software development process, development of control software for production devices and integrating electro-mechanical systems


• Experience with PLC logic design


• Background in low voltage DC electrical systems


• Knowledge of 3D CAD modeling software (i.e., Catia or SolidWorks)


• Proficient in MS Office applications


• Experience with MatLab/Simulink and/or Python


• Knowledge of CAN communications
