JOB BRIEF

The Research Assistant will provide research and support for the Women Preventing Violent Extremism Team in USIP’s Africa Center.

Pay: Between $15.00- $15.75 per hour

Work Schedule: An average of 20 hours per week.

Work Location: This position is based at USIP’s Washington, D.C., headquarters, but will be 100% telework until the headquarters building re-opens to USIP staff.

Expected Project Dates: March 2021 – mid-December 2021 (exact dates are flexible – whenever the student is on summer break)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide overall support for the successful implementation of the Women Preventing Violent Extremism program in East Africa and in the Sahel. Primary responsibilities include:


  • Conducting desk research to support program implementation and team publications on gender, violent extremism and peacebuilding;

  • Supporting the development of training materials and agendas for programmatic activities in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel;  

  • Drafting public outreach materials such as factsheets, web content, briefing materials, etc;

  • Supporting program monitoring and evaluation, including aggregating data from program partners’ reports and entry into program database;

  • Supporting virtual and, when possible, in-person WPVE events; and

  • Performing administrative duties to ensure successful advancement of the portfolio.

QUALIFICATIONS 


  • Must be a full time graduate student in the Washington Metro Area, preferably studying international relations, gender and peacebuilding, or international peace and conflict resolution

  • Intermediate proficiency in French (reading, writing and speaking) required and applicants will be asked to undergo a short proficiency test as part of the interview process.

  • Excellent research and writing skills

  • Ability to review, distill, and articulate themes from across multiple disciplines and policy and research literatures

  • Familiarity with program budgets

  • Familiarity with collecting and organizing basic data sets as well as reporting and data visualization

  • Previous research and office experience preferred

USIP's Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities in the Washington Metropolitan area. Any full-time university student in the Washington area is eligible for these openings.

All USIP contract and employee positions are contingent upon the favorable completion of a suitability background investigation.

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
