The Director, Accounting directs a specified accounting function(s), which may include Financial Reporting, General Accounting Operations, Internal Controls, Taxes, or other.
Responsibilities:
Independently manages and oversees employees within designated function(s), thinks critically and resolves issues
Develops and trains staff on accounting matters, reconciliations, technical accounting, etc.
Develops, implements, and maintains controls around respective function
Manages risk as it relates to designated function(s) by enforcing compliance with internal controls, accounting standards, policies, and procedures
Identifies internal control gaps, process improvements, and implementation of new accounting standards
Develops and maintains related accounting policies and procedures
Assists in the month end closing and financial reporting process including account analysis
The Director, Accounting will have a specified accounting function(s) to direct which may include one or more of the following areas:
Financial Reporting
Directs the preparation of Board of Director reports, quarterly OCC (Office of the Comptroller of the Currency)/Fed reporting requirements, Employee benefit plans (401K/ESOP), and Annual Financial Statement Report
General Accounting Operations
Maintains journal entry and reconciliation assignments to ensure timely completion of the month end close process
Oversees accounting operations including reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger maintenance, and other accounting operational functions as needed
Oversees subledger and general ledger mapping (i.e. payee codes)
Provides interpretations of accounting pronouncements and the impact to the organization to the CFO, CAO, FP&A, and other senior management
Maintains the company chart of accounts; assigns new classifications as may be necessary; maintains 'rollup' of individual G/L (General Ledger) accounts into category groupings
Reviews and monitors accurate reporting of Fixed Assets, Prepaid, Project costs, etc.
Manages the accounting for the Investment and Loan Portfolio
Internal Controls
Directs all financial control operations within accounting and throughout the organization to ensure compliance with FDICIA, COSO, GAAP, and other regulatory and professional standards
Provides FDICIA program oversight and management throughout the organization to ensure regulatory and financial compliance of internal controls over financial reporting
Directs the development of accounting controls, policies, and procedures and enforce compliance
Trains and develops accounting personnel in the area of internal control oversight
Acts as the primary liaison with internal and external auditors
Taxes
Independently manages and oversees all tax related matters for the Company and related subsidiaries
Develops and maintains tax process and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements
Prepares quarterly taxable income forecast for distribution purposes and calculates distributions and state withholdings to shareholders
Liaises with Tax Consultants to ensure accurate and timely preparation of the Federal and State K-1s, oversees entire process start to finish
Directs and oversees shareholder administration
Develops and maintains process to ensure compliance with Sales and Use taxes, 1099, and other miscellaneous tax related matters
Other
Leads projects as needed (implementation of new accounting standards, system upgrades, state grant reporting, etc.
Assists CAO with other technical accounting and tax matters as needed
Directs other managers and supervisors in areas of accounting which may include Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable (Client Billing), Default Invoice Management, or other
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required; Master's degree preferred
10+ years of accounting related experience and 6+ years of Big Four Public Accounting experience in internal controls, FDICIA, Sarbanes-Oxley, preferably in a banking and mortgage-servicing industry
CPA Preferred
Tax experience a plus
Proficiency in regulatory and generally accepted accounting ("GAAP") procedures and standards for the banking and servicing industry
A proven track record of designing and implementing best-practices and process improvements across core finance processes and controls
Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with senior leadership effectively
Takes initiative to identify opportunities and issues and follow through on work activities to capitalize or resolve them; Able to take positive, innovative action without being requested to do so
Demonstrated people management and leadership skills with ability to provide constructive and positive feedback, while motivating and holding team accountable for team performance
Strategic thinker, with the imagination and foresight to conceptualize new ideas and opportunities as well as the implementation skills to bring them to fruition
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Office, and with general ledger computer software/systems
