AppSec Engineer at FINRA in Rockville, Maryland

Job Description:

The Security Engineer works under general supervision and will perform information security tasks commensurate with their experience that ensure applications and projects meet defined quality standards.

Essential Job Functions:


  • Support the application of established processes and techniques to identify, validate and prioritize security risks.

  • Support the architecture and design of security control systems to address requirements.

  • Operate and monitor established security controls.

  • Generate reports according to specification.

  • Support the evaluation of new security technologies, techniques, and tools.

  • Work with team to help review and define information security policies, standards, guidelines and procedures.

  • Monitor and enforce compliance with internal and external regulations, policies, and standards.

  • Assist with adherence to technology policies and comply with all security controls.

  • Ensure all work products meets /exceeds FINRA standards.

Education/Experience Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline with at least two (2) years of related experience, or equivalent training and/or work experience.

  • Experience must include direct experience in one of the following areas: securing networks and systems architecture, design and implementation, secure software assurance, intrusion detection, defense and incident response, security configuration management, access controls design and implementation and security policy and standards development.

  • Broad knowledge of communication protocols.

  • Emerging written and verbal technical communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships that improved the quality of work products.

  • Should be well organized, thorough, and able to handle competing priorities.

  • Ability to maintain focus and develop proficiency in new skills rapidly.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Solid knowledge of one or more Information Security principles and disciplines.

Required Skills:


  • Solid Java Knowledge + Development Skills; e.g. a good understanding of the language, a few related frameworks (e.g. Spring, Hibernate, …), and ability to hit the ground developing in this.

  • Strong desire to make Security their career path

Highly Desired Skills:

  • Application Security (AppSec) domain knowledge/experience, with knowledge of most common vulns; in order of preference:

    • Manual source code review

    • Experience analyzing DAST/SAST scan results

    • Application penetration testing



  • AWS Knowledge + Development Skills (e.g. ideally not just AWS Console access, but API level exposures)

  • Python Knowledge + Development Skills

  • Networking fundamentals (ideally security-centric)

  • Selenium testing automation

Work Conditions:


  • Work is normally performed in an office environment.

  • Occasional travel and extended hours may be required.
