Purpose

A highly motivated individual capable of working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team is being sought to support the interests of a diverse group of scientists by providing onsite management and support for the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments Experiment (SPRUCE). The individual will manage and maintain SPRUCE infrastructure and work with SPRUCE scientific staff to facilitate experimental activities at the SPRUCE site.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all operational functions associated with operating and maintaining the SPRUCE Experiment and its infrastructure including leased office and light-laboratory space in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and the experimental facility approximately 30 miles north in the Marcell Experimental Forest. You will coordinate daily activities with technical and scientific staff from ORNL, the USDA Forest Service, university collaborators and other agency scientists engaged in SPRUCE operations and investigations.

You will be expected to perform periodic surveillances and assessments to evaluate work practices, controls, and corrective actions for the ORNL facilities in Grand Rapids and will participate in incident investigations, operational inspections, and safety audits. You also will advise management on regulatory requirements on operational applicability, and on organizational implementation, provide technical support to line management in the application of regulatory requirements, procedures, and standards for health and safety.

This position reports to the SPRUCE Project Coordinator within the Ecosystem Processes Group which is part of the Biological and Environmental Systems Science Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The position is based in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota vicinity to provide full time oversight for the experiment on the Marcell Experimental Forest; ORNL provides relocation benefits. The successful person will have office space in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and will be provided with company transportation for work related activities. The individual will be expected to travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee periodically to engage in training activities and discussions with SPRUCE staff. Routine, daily communications will be done via remote communication options.

Qualifications Required

You will have earned a BS/BA or a Master's degree in a related field, and 5 or more years of professional field research experience, site specific experience may substitute for five years of general experience. You will have the necessary technical skills to oversee and diagnose operational issues associated with the construction and maintenance of a large and complex environmental manipulation involving ecosystem warming (above and below ground) and elevated CO2 exposures. You also should have or be able to demonstrate experience with biological/forest systems enabling him or her to make operational choices during the maintenance of the SPRUCE study over a decade.

Prior experience with experimental field ecological research, expertise in the use and application of computer-controlled systems for process management, and practical experience in collection and analysis of environmental and biological measurements are highly desirable.

You must have the ability to work as a part of a team and be comfortable in a multi-disciplinary environment. Excellent communications skills also are required for interactions with science colleagues and the public.
