Summary of Job:

Performs repairs and replacements for our commercial HVAC customers. Primarily responsible for performing installs, repairs and maintenance to a variety of equipment including: refrigeration, air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers, humidifiers, capacity controls, semi-hermetic compressors, split systems, flame safeguard controls, air compressors, air driers, and packaged units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Fully understands the fundamentals of installation of new HVAC equipment; ability to draw, install and fabricate duct work.

  • Fully understands basic electrical theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits, and series and parallel circuits; ability to read advanced wiring diagrams; knowledge of Ohms Law; ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values; must be able to troubleshoot advanced electrical circuits.

  • Fully understands basic heating cycle to include identifying components in heating system, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the heating system using a gas pressure test and other devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot; fully understands the theory of combustion and how it relates to combustible fuels such as gas and oil.

  • Fully understands the basics of multiple systems and how each component within the system operates in conjunction with the other components and how that impacts the overall operations of the system as a whole; these systems include air cooled, water cooled, hot water systems, chilled water systems, VAV systems.

  • Must be able to handle stress and job demands.

  • Must be able to cooperatively work with others.

Education and Experience:


  • Universal EPA Certification (recommended)

  • 0-2 years of Commercial HVAC experience preferred

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Skills and Abilities:


  • Must have excellent written communications skills

  • Must have excellent oral communications skills

  • Must have the ability to juggle multiple tasks

  • Must be able to deal with difficult people

  • Must have excellent organizational skills

  • Must be able to work well with other technicians and trade professionals

Individuals may need to ride or drive in a vehicle for 2 or more hours at a time depending on position.

Individuals may be exposed to: cramped work spaces, contaminants, extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions, exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.

Performing this job requires frequent use of hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.  Must be able to sit, talk, hear, and stand frequently throughout the day.  Must be able to climb, reach above shoulder height, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl frequently.  The position occasionally may require lifting heavy objects (up to 75 pounds) and performing strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

Individuals may occasionally be exposed to hazardous conditions, high places and/or hazardous equipment.  May work with or around chemicals that require knowledge of a safety data sheet.
